My great grandparents moved to Fiske Ave near Magoun Sq in 1880. My grandmother grew up there , married and lived nearby. She was a friend of Marshall Sloane Sr. I remember early 1950s going into the furniture store in Magoun Sq. My mother asked to see Mr Sloane and he came down from the mezzanine , called her by her maiden name and hugged her. When I got out of the Navy 1970, my mother took me to meet Mr Sloane at The Century Bank near Foss Park. Like his father, Mr Sloane was gracious and remembered her family. Without a question , he made me a student loan.
Mr Sloane came from good stock, wonderful people.
I never forgot neither his father nor him.
God rest their souls these many years later

I was honored to meet Marshall, Barry, and Linda during my tenure on Magic 106.7. When I was asked to endorse Century Bank, Marshall sat with me in the studio, sharing his many stories. What a man...his spirit was so strong and when you were in his presence, you could feel how deeply he loved his family, and how proud he was on the bank he built. Marshall told me that his employees and his customers were like family to him, and I know that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people (including me) who feel the loss of this great man.

The first time I met Marshall was when he was in his 60's and racing up this long set of stairs to meet me at the top. He wasn't winded and said with a big smile, "I hear that you want to rent a space
in this building." I stood there in silence a little stunned by his vigorous personality. I smile when I think of him and bemoan the fact that he's no longer here.

Barry & Family:
Just found out about your Dad's passing because of an add I saw on TV. He was such a great banker and community person. First met him when I was an examiner with the FDIC and followed his career for years. I know he was very proud of his family and its amazing accomplishments. My deepest condolences to you and your family. He left quite a legacy.
Best Regards,

I was a tenant for 30 years in one of Marshall's buildings in Medford Square. When it can time to renew my lease I would visit him and we would talk for awhile about Winter Hill, his father and mother and all he learned from them. Well I learned a lot from Marshall. He made it clear that family was everything and treating people fairly and respectfully was critical. He was a gentleman and a compassionate soul with values and morals and he was not afraid of hard work. I will miss you and your wisdom.

To the Sloane Family, I just found out about the passing of Marshall Sloane today when I went to your Quincy branch. I have been a customer since Century Bank opened in Quincy. I never met the gentleman but for some reason I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. His pleasant face always made me feel comfortable dealing with Century Bank. Marshall Sloane is someone I would have liked to have met. My condolences to the entire Sloane family.

Dear Marshall,
We never did get together for that cup of coffee. I thank you for the nice letter you wrote. My thoughts are always of you as a young boy - we went to Somerville High and it was the greatest years of our life - we had a wonderful group of friends - I even came to your house once - the 3 or 6 decker house on Winter Hill. Many memories and I did want to see you for that coffee and to rehatch old thoughts but it was not possible.
You are fantastic - you are a great guy. When I look at your picture I remember you as 16 years old and very serious and quiet. Probably contemplating ideas for your future years. You worked hard and leave a family that should be so very proud of you. sincerely, Mary Spinosa Erbafina

My dad, Robert James Blumsack, grew up in Somerville with Marshall Sloane and remained best of friends throughout their lives. Marshall Sloane eulogized my Dad at City Hall in Medford days ofter my Dad passed. I remember going to their beautiful home in Pocasset and loving the beauty that surrounded us. Marshall Sloane was a true gentleman. I have been told over the years of what a dynamic and hard working gentleman he was. I can remember working for my Dad during the summers and seeing him downstairs at the first bank on Dexter St.and Main St. May you rest in peace and I know you and Dad are having fun talking about the good old days. Oh and I forgot to mention Burton Price. The fabulous 3. Love to the Sloane family and my heartfelt condolences to all. Cheryl Blumsack- Harold

My thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and the entire Sloane family
I always enjoyed the friendship that I had with Marshall during my 10 years as Mayor of Somerville as well as the many years serving as the Register of Deeds. Marshall has touched so many and each of us learned a valuable lesson on how important it is to treat others with respect. Also how equally important it is in maintaining a friendship. I wiil miss you my friend.

Dear Barbara, Jonathan, Barry, and Linda, I was deeply saddened to read of Marshall's passing. He was a great man, kind and generous to so many, whether through caring for the individual or through his charitable involvement. He did not just give financially, he gave of himself. It was a great pleasure to work with him as his attorney, and as his customer. He helped me when my father went into assisted living to be sure that we could take care of him in an orderly way. My family and I will never forget that kindness. May his memory be a blessing.

As time is the ultimate race Mr. Sloane showed us all that the journey is more than that. Having watched him come into work and put himself into something he spent a lifetime and then some building, it made me proud to say I work for Century Bank and had a boss that showed us all what dedication and hard work bring. To Linda and Barry my heart sits shiva with you and your families.I pray that you find your strength to get through this difficult time and carry your mother forward until she is reunited with her beloved Marshall. God Bless and be well.
