Martha Clough Obituary

84, of 7 RiverWoods Dr, died on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at the Exeter Hospital. She was born on March 14, 1920 in Morristown. NJ, the daughter of the late Rev. Thomas W. and Gertrude C. (Cate) Attridge. Martha received a Bachelor's Degree from Wellesley College in 1940, and went on to serve her country as a Lieutenant in the US Navy during WW II. After marrying Karl E. R. Clough in 1946, she moved to Glen Ridge, NJ where she was active in the community and became a Docent and Trustee at the Montclair Art Museum. The family later moved to Sudbury, MA where she resided for thirty years and was involved in both volunteer and elected positions in various community organizations, including the school board and library committee. But it was Martha's love of art, education, and history which caused her to embark on a 25 year career with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. She began as a Volunteer Docent and later gained employment in the Education Department at the museum. She was instrumental in creating programs and tours for students and lovers of art of all ages. Martha was also a volunteer for the Junior League in Glen Ridge, NJ and Boston, MA. She was a lifelong summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, Maine where she enjoyed sailing and family vacations. For the last 9 years she has been a resident of RiverWoods in Exeter, NH where she actively participated in many resident committees. Martha was predeceased by her husband Karl in 1997 and by a daughter, Martha Farmer in 1998. She is survived by 3 daughters; Rosalie Clough of New York, NY; Susan Clough of Boothbay Harbor, ME; and Valerie (and her husband Joe) Sandford of Wethersfield, CT; 1 son, Karl "Ted" E. R. Clough Jr. (and wife Lynn) of Amelia Island, FL; son-in-law Russ Farmer of Hamilton, Ohio; and grandson Charles Sandford of Wethersfield, CT. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 5th at 2 PM in the Great Bay Room at RiverWoods of Exeter, 7 RiverWoods Drive, Exeter, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Attention: Development Office, 465 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02115 in memory of Martha C. A. Clough. I remember your mother with fond memories of her at the MFA, I worked in membership & my husband was the printer for many years at the MFA, he & your mother had a very special friendship as did I. I know she will be sadly missed. My thoughts & prayers are with you all.
