A True Shipmate and Friend thats what Matt Bryant was to me and many others! Although Matt and I served at the same time on the USS Harry E. Yarnell DLG-17, 1970 -1973, we did not know each other as friends. It was though our annual ship reunions that our friendship grew and blossomed. Matt was one of those special individuals you meet and you know and feel a special connection to instantly. The navy was in his blood and he loved it and his shipmates. His father, Leonard, dropped out of school after grade 11, joined the navy in 1941, went to signalman school, and served aboard the USS Texas. In June of 1943, he volunteered to go to a new ship being commissioned in Boston. The USS Hale DD 642, a Fletcher-class tin can. His ship went to the Pacific for the rest of the war earning 6 battle stars. They spent a fair amount of time on the picket line and shot down a couple of Japanese planes and had a couple of near misses from kamikazes. Matt was given several of the 20 mm shell casings from those firings by his father and he gifted me a couple of them. I, being a woodturner, turned and gifted to Matt a swagger stick. At the butt end, I had one of the 20 mm shell casings engraved with Matts and his fathers names, etc. At the pointer end, I attached a 45 cal bullet. Quoting Matt on the receipt of the gift, Well mate, you really outdid yourself this time. What a masterpiece! My dad would have been so proud and thrilled at how you made something so simple into a true work of art. Matt obviously looked up to his father as a hero, someone to model your life after, no wonder the navy was in his blood!

The USS Cassin Young Crew will be missing a brother, shipmate and friend. Matt brought so much to the Crew and Cassin Young. Matt was always there with a hand, a story and a sense of humor. He had a profound dedication to His Country and the United States Navy. He was truly a decent human being.
Fair Winds and Following Seas.
