Mark Wenner

April 26, 2007

My name is Mark Wenner. I live with Michael's sister, Barbara.

I was lucky enough to consider Michael a friend. I usually saw Michael on holidays and at family get togethers at his sister Janet's house and at Barbara's condo. I ALWAYS looked forward to seeing Michael at these times and would often ask Barbara if Michael was going to be there, and I would be disappointed if he didn't come. Michael always had interesting facts and topics to discuss. Every time I was with Michael, I was always amazed at his encyclopedia knowledge of just about everything. His memory was astounding. To me, Michael was the definition of "well read", with "well understood" and "well explained" thrown in. And along with all of that, there was Michael’s kindness. When I was trying to console Barbara after Michael’s death, the one word that came up to describe Michael was kind.

A few years ago we all rented a ski lodge and I had the chance to spend an entire day with Michael, Barbara and Janet, playing word games (specifically Password). I was teamed up with Michael and I will never forget that time we all spent together that day. I felt that Michael and I made a connection that day, one I will always hold on to as I think of Michael.

Barbara and I recently moved to Framingham, and one of the first things we realized and spoke about was that we would be closer to Michael and how great it would be to have Michael over on a frequent basis. Unfortunately that was when Michael got sick and it never happened. I only saw Michael a few times when he was sick and he always had a smile for me. That made me feel special. I remember the last time I went to see him, and the look we shared when I shook his hand and I said "See ya Michael". I really wanted to say that I loved him, for I feared the worst that day, but I didn't say it because I didn't want to scare him. I love and miss you Michael.

To Mike's family,
I knew him since I started at HP, and for that time I am grateful. I loved how he was willing to teach if you were willing to learn; and I learned so much, not just about work, but about the world around us, and the richness of life in general. I have a list of movies he told me to see, many with historical relevance. I'll miss the stories and thoughtfulness, humor and humility, the irony and observances, the petrified orange and dangling prisms at his desk. Every time I remember him, I'll hear the chinging of his rings. Carry on with the fond memories.

Mike was a rock! He was a mountain of information and always willing to share that information if asked. He was able to see things clearly and reduce the most complex problems to the basics. Mike was the king of trivia and always amazed me with knowledge about so many subjects.

He did not impose his knowledge or try to impress but he was in fact very impressive to work with.

I enjoyed the years I worked with Mike at Hewlett Packard and I know he has created a void that cannot be filled.

Mike has left his mark and affected so many in a positive way. I want to extend my deepest sympathies to his family.

Mike was the nicest guy ever...
Many a late night I know of sales reps who would wander over with a cable or cabinet EIA question knowing only Mike would know. And he did- always with a smile. They don't make 'em like that any more.

To the Coarr family,
I first met Mike back in 1996. Since moving to the Andover office, Mike and I discovered we shared an interest in many subjects: World History, Religion, US Military, Politics, Reality TV and our favorite "useless trivia". I will miss having him as my human reference manual. He provided his knowledge, and experience, to me many times over the past 11 years. My deepest sympathies to you and the entire Coarr family. "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8) God Bless.

I see that I am not the only one that remembers Mike's smile! I worked with him for many years and no matter how many times I asked him to do a service call, or asked him a question; that may not have even applied to his job, he would know the answer or would find it for me. He was always happy to go the extra mile to help and he was never without a smile. He will be missed. I will keep him and all his family in my prayers.

I worked with Mike for many years at HP and remember him as one of those rare individuals that was always willing to help, humble in nature and truly a kind sole. He was quick to laugh and loved recounting our more entertaining customer stories. He remembered more details about my own stories than I did and they always got better with each telling. The world has lost a truly wonderful person. To the Coarr family, my heart goes out to you and you have my deepest sympathies.

Getting to work early at the HP Burlington office meant that you could tap into Mike's well-thought-out expertise over coffee in the cafeteria. Mike held pre-day court at the same table there for many years, and we all gravitated to it. On the job, his easy affability and crisp knowledge earned praise from colleagues and customers. We miss him.
