Molly Matson Obituary

MATSON, Molly H. Of Duxbury, 88, formerly of Brookline, at home October 5, 2010. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the Cleveland correspondent for the jazz magazine Metronome at age 16 and worked during WWII in the PR department of Crile General Hospital for wounded soldiers. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, Rutgers University library school, and held a Master's in English from Boston College. She loved her reference work with students and colleagues at Healey Library at UMass/Boston where she was employed for 25 years. Her wit, intellectual curiosity, and fervor for social justice, as well as her keen interest in the lives of all she met will be greatly missed. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Matson; adored mother of Lucy Hudson and her husband Peter of Germantown, MD, Kate Matson and her husband Mark Harvey of Arlington, MA and Martha Matson and her husband Cove Britton of Santa Cruz, CA; cherished grandmother of Catherine Matson-Grosser, James Hudson; Nora, Mae, and Eve Britton; inspiring aunt to James Holt. A Celebration of Life service will be held mid November. Donations in her memory may be made to American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102 or online: http://afsc.org/give.

Molly was regal and funny, erudite and common-sensical, a wonderful colleague to everyone at UMass/Boston, students and faculty alike. We will fondly remember our friendship with her and Kenny.

I still think of Molly as that vibrant, laughing friend of my mom and dad's at Twelfth Night parties. She was a wonderful gift to this world! Maria
