CALLAHAN, Neil R. Of Waldwick, NJ, formerly of Malden, MA and Wolfeboro, NH, died on June 16, 2022, peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was 86. Mr. Callahan was born in Lynn, MA, son of the late D. Edward and Marion Nihan Callahan. He graduated from Malden High School, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Massachusetts Military Academy and attended Northeastern University. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard as Second Lieutenant. Neil was elected President of local 453 OPEIU at the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, and he was elected to the Malden City Council. He served on the Malden Redevelopment Authority and was the Director of Public Works in Malden, MA. He was a Senior Life Member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and was elected First Sergeant of Infantry. Neil was a member of the Malden Kiwanis Club and the Wolfeboro Lions Club. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Margaret Kelley Callahan, and their children Joanne Callahan and her husband Kennedy Gorgey and their children Leila and Daniel of Ridgewood, NJ, Neil Callahan and his wife Maria Brown Callahan and their children Catherine, Grace, Olivia and Christina of Tenafly, NJ, and Maura Callahan and her partner Erica Desfosses of Amesbury, MA. Neil is survived by his sister Marion Callahan Harney and her husband John J. Harney of Newport Beach, CA, and their sons Kevin of Highlands Ranch, CO, Paul of Sacramento, CA, Daniel of Carlsbad, CA, and Steve of Las Vegas, NV; and his sister-in-law Clare Bennett Callahan; and her daughter Nancy both of Marblehead, MA. He was predeceased by his brother Daniel Edward Callahan, Jr.; and his nephew Daniel Edward Callahan, III. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Virginia K. Cronin of Swampscott, MA, Agnes K. Manning of Amesbury, MA, Dr. Maryellen Kelley of Eastham, MA, Patricia K. Conway of Osterville, MA, Kathryn K. Brasco of Weston, MA; and his brothers-in-law Albert T. Kelley of Lexington, KY, Thomas M. Kelley of Plymouth, MA, Dr. Joseph Conway of Osterville, MA, and Michael Brasco of Weston, MA, and extended family, Catherine Brown Arroyo and Ariel Arroyo and their children Alexandra and Joaquin. Visitation at The Barrett Leber Funeral Home, 148 Dean Dr., TENAFLY, NJ on Friday, June 24, 2022 from 4-8 PM. Funeral Mass, Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 11 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 10 County Rd., Tenafly, NJ. Cremation Private. Memorial Services and Graveside Burial will be held in September at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lynn, MA.
