Patrick was a nice quiet leader of our Knights teams from 1962 through 1966. As a member of the team and a 1965 graduate, Pat was an inspiration to me. I followed his career for many years, a career which was summed up in a book by Brian Wallace, another Southie graduate who himself had a successful career in Boston politics. I´ll remember always the fantastic runs Pat had at White Stadium to the excitement of 10,000 maniacal fans.

I was a teammate of Pat at Southie, having graduated a year before him in 1965. I recall Pat joining the team when I was a sophomore. My oldest brother had graduated with another Southie three-sport All Star athlete, Dom Gentile. I had been to many games watching Dominic. I did not think there would ever be another like him. To my shock, on the first day of practice my sophomore year, Pat displayed a a rare combination of speed, athleticism, and strength. Mind you, Pat was only 15 playing against juniors and seniors. I can attest, from the onset, Pat presented himself as a leader. He never disappointed his teammates and fans! During my high school and college days, Pat and Dom were the very best running backs in the City, and, possibley, in the state. I remember watching Pat play in the Manning Bowl All-Star Game my senior year. Pat ran through the best defensive players in the state. He may have been the game´s MVP! In addition to his athletic prowess, Pat was a somewhat quiet and humble young man and leader. It was a pleasure of mine having known Pat for the three years we were teammates God Bless him.

I still remember your friendship you showed towards me as a freshman. My locker was on the third floor and it was situated right next to the doors leading to another part of the building. When ever I was at my locker and pat walked by he would open the door and gently push me into the locker. At first I had to look who did it, but after that I just knew it was him and laughed as he did as he went on his way. Never forget PAT. Hid bless him

To My Flaherty Friend´s & Old Neighbor´s,
I just heard of Pat´s passing and I feel so bad that I didn´t know! Pat was always so kind and I remember him being an athlete as a little girl! It´s easy to say athlete when you say the name Flaherty though, you ALL WERE!! I started out as a lil tomboy playing with all the boys in the family that would play with me and having the sweet, Maureen teach me how to whistle! It´s a skill that I´m trying to train my Granddaughter to learn now and I say to this day; My friend Maureen Flaherty taught me how to whistle! Oh when I think back, she had so much patience with me! She learned that from Pat and all her amazing brother´s! I love you all as if you are my own brother´s! Rest In Peace Pat, you were truly a gentleman and a man I´ll never forget!!
Love,
Ellen

Deepest Condolences to Stephen, Tommy, Michael, Paul, Robert and your Families for the loss of your Brother, Patrick (aka Papa to all his nieces and nephews).
It was December 31, 1950, when Renie and Big Steve Flaherty came down the hallway at Crowley Rogers Way, banging pots and pan covers outside our parent´s, Bob and Jackie O´Meara´s apartment. After all, it was New Year´s Eve. Our Dad opened the door and invited them in. That was the beginning of our now seventy one plus years of love and friendship with the Flaherty´s. At this time in 1950, Patrick and Stephen were ages 2 and 1 and our family there was Billy, twins Maureen(me)/Michael approx ages 1 and newborns. Our parents became close friends. Our family moved out of Southie around 1952-1953, however; we remained close to The Flaherty´s. Both families went on through the years to each have 6 boys and 1 girl.
12 boys and 2 girls total between two families! Good Irish/Catholic families they were.
Patrick was the leader of the pack. He was always shy, quiet, and a boy to man of few words, however; he was very much in charge. Patrick was well loved and cherished by his parents, Renie and Steve along with his siblings, Stephen, Tommy, Maureen, Michael, Paul and Robert. Oh how they looked up to him.
Southie and many cities throughout Boston and beyond, marveled at Patrick´s football and other sports accomplishments, as did everyone that knew him. His family were his biggest fans. Patrick was/is a legend. He loved his Family. He loved his sports. He was intelligent. He was/is loved by many. He was funny. He was stubborn. He wasn´t perfect, however; he was a good man. Above all, Patrick was a great son, and to his siblings, he was a cherished "big brother" and that will always be.
Memories of you will be with us always. We are content knowing that you are now at peace in God´s hands along with your Mom and Dad, your niece Meghan and your sister Maureen.
Toodle Loo, Ta-Ta Patrick

I had the pleasure of working with "Mr. Pat" at the Rusty Scupper in Providence in the late 70's. A wonderful guy who always looked out for and helped others. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him in over 40 years, but he will always have a warm place in my memory. Bob Goodhue, Jackson, NH

I was a freshman at southie and Charlie ray had basketball tryouts, I was thrown onto the court and who did I encounter the one and only pat Flaherty. I got down in a defensive position thinking I´m going to stop him. I look at him and before I new it he was past me in for a lay up. I tried again and again same results. At the end of the practice he came over to me and told me to not give up. When I was a sophomore and joe Crowley the football coach was passing out game jerseys he reached into the pile of jerseys and gave me number 63. The legend had worn that jersey the year before and now I had to try and follow pat, not happening. He was quite but always helpful Another southie great has gone way to soon. God bless pat and the entire Flaherty family
