PETER DORAN Obituary

DORAN, Peter R. Peter R. Doran, age 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at his home. Peter was born on April 27, 1942 to the late Robert and Ruth E. (Wilson) Doran in Lexington, MA. After graduating from Lexington High School, he went on to earn a BA in Business Administration at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He then attended the University of Chicago, earning his MBA. He was the beloved husband of Linda R. (Hibner) Doran, who he met while she attended the Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. After qualifying for her RN, they became engaged, and soon married on September 5, 1967 in Lockport, Illinois. Following a honeymoon in Jamaica, they moved to Hamilton, Massachusetts and bought a home where they raised their two sons, David and Matthew. Peter was a professor of Business and Accounting at North Shore Community College for thirty-five years. Simultaneously, he also worked as Comptroller for the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, joining them at the time when the Essex Institute and Peabody Museums merged. He was the Treasure for the Seamen's Widow and Orphan Association of Salem for many years, a job he took very seriously and with pride. He also served the First Church Wenham in many fiscal capacities during the 1970s-80s, including Trustee and Treasurer. He was an avid sports fan, but he loved the Red Sox the most. He also had a deep love of music and good books. He was also extremely fond of flower gardens, having grown up working in his father's green house as a boy, before he left for college. He passed these interests to both his sons. He loved to travel in spite of the fact that he had rheumatoid arthritis for sixty years and ankylosing spondylitis for forty years. He and Linda took the family to many national parks, including one trip where they visited the Grand Canyon. One summer he and Linda, accompanied by his mother, Ruth, and son, Matt, traveled to England, wanting to see his father's ancestral homeland. They also traveled one summer to Ireland. Peter was loved by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was also fondly remembered by the many people he met along life's journey, sustaining those friendships for the remainder of his life. In addition to his loving wife Linda, Peter is survived by two sons, David Doran and his wife Julie Papageorge of Hamilton, MA and Matthew Doran of Bethlehem, NH; one granddaughter, Hailee Doran of Florida; and a brother, Guy Doran and his wife Elaine, of Lexington MA. He was predeceased by his brother Jonathan Doran of Lexington, who retired and spent his last years in Florida. Peter's Funeral Service will be celebrated at First Church in Wenham, 1 Arbor Street, on Thursday, March 9th at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service celebrating his long and happy life. Immediately following, there will be a reception for family and friends at the adjoining Holland Hall. Burial will be Friday, March 10th at the Westview Cemetery, 522 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA. Mr. Doran introduced me to the world of accountancy. After two years studying at Berklee College of Music I was looking for a new career direction. I was fortunate to find myself in Pete Doran´s accounting class. Mr. Doran introduced me a whole new world and given my propensity for being detailed and methodical, accounting was a good fit and the way Mr. Doran taught accounting was life changing. I excelled in accounting and later in finance and I attribute my successful career in both disciplines to what Mr. Doran taught me. I still love to play jazz but my life´s accomplishments were made possible thanks to Pete Doran. I will always remember how dedicated he was to teaching us. It wasn´t all about debits and credits. It was about learning your lessons well and doing the best job possible for your client and your organization. A life long lesson that I continue to apply each and every day. Thank you Pete. We miss you. We are forever thankful for all that you taught us and did for us.
