I am so sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Hotton. I read his column every Sunday in the Times Union. His advice was always excellent and I used most of it. I'm sure he will be silently honored by many.

I worked with Peter Hotton for years, adevoted editor who added pizzazz headlines to my chess column. Impossible to explain what a wonderful and thorugh person he was

I worked directly with Peter at the Globe in 1970-71 and Tim Leland's words are only the start of his concern and integrity as a human being. I last saw him in 2004 at the testimonial dinner (at the Globe) for Harold Dondis, his 50-year comrade in chess (still active in his 90's). I nicknamed him Santa Hooten/Hotton in 1970, which may explain a lot to those who never saw his beard or met him personally. In my 45 years in communications I've rarely met anyone with his kind, considerate and thoughtful demeanor.

I met Peter Hotten once at a "Home Show" and I think I scared him. My enthusiasm came off as weird fan rather than adoring fan. He was the "father" who showed me how to do things around my first house while my husband traveled on average four days a week and two babies tangled around my feet. He taught me about the structure of my home, the performance of my utilities, expectations of my fixtures, the reasons things were performing the way they were, and what and why for the strange noises in all parts of the house. And that's only the beginning of what he taught me. He was my tome of knowledge when I later renovated and knew better than anyone standing there what each contractor was referring to and that made them take notice. I feel like I lost a trusted friend and will miss him dearly. And I still have the clip of the recipe to make a tack cloth from at least twenty years ago if anyone needs it. God bless you Peter Hotten.

You only need to look to the sky above, find the brightest shining star and there will be your loved one. The twinkle in his eye is now but a twinkle in the sky. A loving devoted family has sent him on his final journey. Remember the good times, know his suffering is over and he rests in peace. Prayers are sent your way.

Dear Gina and your entire family - Heartfelt wishes and sympathy on your dad's passing. The loss of a legend, no doubt. Remember the wonderful legacy he leaves, and cherish the wit and the wisdom - such a treasure nowadays! Hugs - Mary

On hearing the sad news, a friend said: "An elder dying is like a library burning." That is certainly, sadly true with the passing of Peter Hotton. He shared his wisdom, his wit and his cheerful nature so generously, he will live on forever in the hearts and memories of untold numbers of people he never even met. To Lucia, Gina and the rest of the family: you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Wishing you Peace and Comfort.
