RALPH WILLARD Obituary

WILLARD, Ralph Randle It is with great sadness and love that the family of Ralph Randle Willard announces his death at 81 years of age, on December 9, 2024, in Cary, NC. A true force of nature, Ralph was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on July 9, 1943. He led a life marked by professional achievement and personal devotion. His accomplishments were numerous and varied. Ralph was a revered figure in the business world, best known as a Founding Partner of Bain and Co., where his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence set a high standard in the consulting industry. A passionate intellectual, his educational journey through Fort Scott High School, Stanford University and Harvard Business School laid a solid foundation for his illustrious career. His professional achievements were paralleled by his personal interests; Ralph was an avid traveler, a connoisseur of fine wines, a rabid Boston Red Sox fan and a passionate collector of Greek antiquities. His love for ancient history was reflected in his extensive antiquities collection that was admired by many. Head of a large and extended family, Ralph was a devoted husband, dedicated father and a guiding light and mentor to many. Ralph is survived by his beloved wife, Gizelda, with whom he shared a strong marriage, friendship and partnership; and their children, Justin (Lori), Blair, Sarah (Vincent), Rebecca (Ben), Lincoln and Olivia; five cherished grandchildren, Sawyer, Sullivan, Crosby, Keegan and Lily. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Willard and his sister, Leighann Hackney; as well as his nieces and nephews, Jenni, Chris, Walker and Jordan. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph McMorris Willard and Jean Olive Willard. His legacy of integrity, kindness and generosity will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him. Ralph's presence will be profoundly missed but his impact and spirit will continue to be felt by all. The family thanks the many staff members at Brookdale of Cary, who took such great and loving care of Ralph over the last ten months. A Celebration of Ralph's Life will be held in the future, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and legacy. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, a cause close to his heart.

Gizelda, I met you at a class reunion for Fort Scott (Kansas) High School, perhaps in 2011. We may have met Lincoln and Olivia at that event. He was so proud to talk about his kids.
Ralph and I were debate partners for our junior and senior years in the brutal high school tournaments, where Ralph ("Randy" in those days) was the best speaker in the MO, KS, OK region. His success, along with nearly perfect SAT scores, got him a scholarship at Stanford. Since I shared his debate tournament championships, I rode his coattails to a debate scholarship at Oregon. Ralph showed his appreciation for our debate coach, Kenneth Mosier, in whose name he set up several scholarship endowments.
We stayed in touch over the years and I watched his many marvelous achievements, which established Ralph as one of the most successful and influential business leaders in America.

I will always remember him, and wish comfort for you and the children.

Working with Ralph was truly a gift. He took me under his wing and provided me with what I fondly call my "working MBA." I often think of Ralph and the invaluable lessons he taught me. I will forever be grateful for the years I was fortunate enough to work with him, his generosity, kindness, and for treating me like family for so many years. Gizelda and kids, I hope you can find comfort in your memories of the wonderful times you had with Ralph. With our condolences, Ellen (MacKenzie) Snow
