Baruch Dayan Emeth.

We are so saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Reuven Cohn.

Reuven was a very special person. Not only was he an intellectually gifted individual , he was also a wonderfully talented teacher and lawyer. People who knew him, even slightly, could tell what a
kind and humble human being he was.

All who were lucky enough to know him, whether as a family member, client, coworker, student, friend or acquaintance, will miss him.

May his neshama rest in Gan Eden and may he continue to be a source of blessing to his family, friends and klal Yisrael.

I submitted something else about Reuven. I wanted to add that my children, Ariel and Adina Mayse lived in Newton, MA for a year and attended Shaarei Tefillah. They called me to inform me that they found out he had passed away. I told them I knew and that I had been at the funeral and I related some things that were shared at the funeral. When I told them that Rabbi Samuels said that he always greeted newcomers very kindly, Adina said, he also welcomed them into Shaarei in an especially warm manner and that he was one of the first people to come over to them to do so. This particularly stood out in their memory of their year in Newton.

I personally took a number of courses with Reuven at Maayan. He was a very special teacher. He always taught on a very high madrega yet very easy to follow and grasp. I will truly miss the opportunity to learn with him in the future.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Although your grief may seem unbearable, know that God wants to comfort you. Pour out your heart to him in prayer and experience the peace that only he can give. Jeremiah 29:11

Reuven was our youngest mechutan, and it is truly tragic that he should die so early, so young.
He was a very fine man, very thoughtful and with a sense of humour, a very learned man from whom I always learnt something.
The last time we met, at the BatMitzva of our mutual granddaughter Raya, he was encouraging me to read Targum Onkelos regularly as an aid to Daf Yomi.
We know that he and Rochelle produced fine children who themselves are the parents of six great girls.
These days, when I recite Shema, I think the most meaningful phrase for me at this time in life is "Veshinantam Levanecha", the responsibility we have to teach and pass on to those who will live afterwards our great heritage. Reuven did that to the fullest, not only with his own children, but with a very much wider congregation ranging from children to adults and seniors. I remember meeting for the first time a professional colleague who used to be their neighbour and who said "Reuven is the finest teacher of Mishna I have ever had."
He will be very much missed.

I was very sorry to hear if Reuven's passing. I had many conversations with him in high school and the through chance meetings when I visited Boston. Besides his obvious intellectual prowess, Reuven had the gentleness and tolerance of a true humanist. His smile was both humorous and understanding. A loss I am sure to all who came in contact with him. My condolences.Szaja Charles Gottlieb

I am saddened by the loss of such a fine teacher and man from the Boston Jewish community. Rabbi Cohn had the patience to sit and teach a Mishnah to me when I had no background in the text. He will be missed by everyone who was blessed to have learned from him.

Dear Rabbi Cohn Z"l,

I terribly miss you.

I long for your extraordinary personality of a leader, a role model, and an educator.

Your sense of warmth and happiness mixed with a sense of seriousness really inspired me.

There is so much that could be learned from you, even when you are not teaching.

I will miss our little conversations in shul. Your wise comments and advise were always helpful and empowering.

I will yearn for your presence in school. You were so confident and outgoing but also very humble.

I pine for your Jewish History classes. You were so passionate about Jewish history. You taught us in such a deep and critical way.

You were not satisfied by simply explaining an effect without it's cause. You taught us to examine things through different lenses. To try to understand events in history from more than one perspective.

I particularly remember, reading an article about the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. You were displeased with the article because it stated that Jewish history is long painful and sad.

You insisted on also showing us the innovative and fruitful side of the story. You showed us history was not as simple as we thought.

You cared about each one of your students on a personal level.

When we spoke out of class, you tried to connect what we learned in class to things I was personally passionate about. You shared beautiful articles with me because you thought I may find interest in them. You really cared about us and wanted us to learn.

You wanted us to really learn and not just memorize information for a test. You were so happy when we cared and thought deeply about Jewish tradition.

You valued your students and their ideas so much. You replied to my emails with such thoughtful and sophisticated responses.

I will miss you so much.

I will miss your sense of humor and sarcastic jokes.
I will miss seeing you on the train after school.
I will miss shaking your hand on Shabbat.
And I will miss sending these emails.

I wish I appreciated these things before you passed away.

On our first visits to Shaarei, you welcomed us and engaged us in conversation. It meant so much to me and my family. You really made us feel welcome. You made us feel that you were truly interested in who we are. I admire and appreciate that so much.

Thank you Rabbi Cohn.
Thank you for being my teacher in school and out of school.
Thank you for inspiring us to be good people.
Thank you for your constant caring and giving to the community.

With tremendous sorrow and love,
Itay.

What a terrible loss for the Jewish community. I never had Rabbi Cohn as a teacher but so many students sang his praises that he will long be remembered for the impact on his students' lives. May his memory be always for a blessing. My deepest condolences to the entire Cohn family.

From Rabbi Cohn I learned Mishnah and many other things. Rabbi Cohn never failed to pay attention to the students with challenging questions. He never failed to make me feel that my learning and questions, and those of all his students, were important to him. May his memory be for a blessing.

Rabbi Reuven Cohn. Was a huge inpact on my learning of Talmud in the Me'ah program at Hebrew College. I thought he was very spiritual and brought the Talmud to an understanding that help me appreciate the Torah more than ever before. He knew my late husband who went to Maimonides at the same time he attended. He will be greatly missed for the whole Boston Jewish Community. His life was truly a blessing for so many!

Eliezer and I knew each other for a few years in High School, and of course Rabbi Kohn played an indelible role in my life. My family and I spent a year in Sharon a few years back and my daughter Avigail studied with Reuven at Maimonides. He was by far her favorite teacher- and he set a standard for the ideal history teacher. I saw him a few months back during a visit to Newton and we spent some time catching up. Ironically, Just a day or two ago I thought of contacting him to discuss his approach to teaching history. He was a wonderful person and will be sorely missed. Yitzhak (Eric) Sokoloff
