Richard Angelo (1959-2012)
Today, August 18th is always a tough emotional day...
This gentleman was my first kickboxing instructor. He then evolved into a life coach and also a family member to me. I mean... definitely a role model I look up to him. Dude was a hero to myself and many others. In fact, it's a small serendipitous world; Richie ended up marrying my best friend's aunt. Rich was a great man.
On this day, eight years ago he left this Earth at the young age of 53. He was a special person, it was devastating. It's still sad to miss him but of course I'm grateful, honored, happy and blessed to know him. I think about him everyday and all of the martial arts and life lessons he taught.
This was the final picture of him ever taken on Earth. What a special picture he was shinning in it with no digital effects but make no mistake there are special effects in the picture, because he is in it.
I salute you today and forever my Kickboxing Coach and loved one, Rich Angelo. You were always in my corner both in and out of the ring.
Love you Richie!
Love,
Zubin
My hero and also to many others...

Richie I probably think about you almost everyday. Even now if I really start thinking about you being gone I start to cry. Usually I think about the way you lived and just knowing you and how happy it made me feel, even to this day proud to know you.
You were in my corner in the ring but even more so in life. I knew you as kickboxing and martial arts instructor, but more so as a man, as Richie. You were a hero to me. I wish I could have told you that but I know that you knew.
One time I was walking into Patty's daughters christining I was wondering where to sit. You called out "hey Zube" and waved me over to sit next to you. I felt like a little kid who just got called over by one of his heroes. I was so happy and beaming just to sit next to you.
Richie you had that kind of effect in the world, with people, and especially me. Very few people who I have ever known walk the face of this Earth have earned that level of love, respect, admiration and endearment from me.
I know you're in a great place and I feel your prescence from there. God blessed you Richie and we are all blessed by knowing you.
Much thanks, love and blessings

Rich, Today I drove up Broadway in Everett and turned my head to the school. WOW I started to cry again, you are so missed by so many people. I met you years ago when I took care of your Nana Mary Angelo and I felt the love and warmth you put out towards every person you ever met back then. I can still hear your words when training my son Christopher in your Karate classes and the encouragement you gave to the Tournament Team every time we went to Florida to compete and represent your school. You were such a GEM in our lives and I will never forget you. I hope to see you again one day on the other side, till then love and peace to your family. An Angel in life and now an Angel sitting with the Lord.

I just recently found out about Richie passing away and I want to extend my sympathy to the entire Angelo family. I met Richie in 1979 when he was a student at Springfield College. He was a funny, kind and considerate person. From all of the entries in this guest book, nothing had changed. I have many great memories of him, but the one that changed my life and will stay with me forever was when he helped me open up about my mothers death. She passed away when I was 12 and at 18 I still couldn't talk about it. Richie encouraged me to go to the cemetary. We sat at her grave for hours, and he kept telling me to talk to her because she could
hear me. From that day on my life changed. Richie had a special way of helping people, and I don't think he even realized it. We had not seen or spoken in 31 years but I often thought of him fondly. To his wife and daughters, I just want you to know that I know you were and will always be the loves of his life. When he loved, he
loved wholeheartedly. That's just the kind of guy he was, and that's what made him so special. God Bless you and may all the wonderful memories you've shared comfort you.
Sincerely,
Lisa Bonales Capparelli

I am so grateful for having known him for so many years and for all the Karate classes and time he spent with my son Christopher. We are all so very sorry of hearing he has gone home to our Heavenly Father at such a very young age. Rich you will be so dearly missed. Our condolences go to your wonderful family.

The following is from my site and is what I wrote for Rich.
The name of this column is Weakness is a crime for many reasons. It is not just about weakness of the body, but also weakness of the spirit, of the mind and of will. It is about teaching you to be stronger in all of these areas and about how to make your life better. I am writing now in great sadness because one of the strongest people that I have ever met has just left this world, Mr. Richard Angelo.
Many of you know Rich, he was the owner of Rich Angelo's Karate Academy on Ferry Street in Everett, and then on lower Broadway for over 20 years. Rich was instrumental in teaching many of the area's children and adults on how to be stronger in body, mind and spirit through martial arts and strength training. Rich was also a mentor, father figure, like a brother and a best friend to me for most of my life.
I learned many lessons from Rich in the time that we had together. Rich was my first boxing/kickboxing coach, and the best one that I ever had. He taught me how to fight and not let the punches and kicks an opponent threw at me affect my will to win (not only in the gym but in life). He taught me the value of achieving what you want in life through dedication and hard work. He, along with my grandfather and Uncles, instilled the value of integrity. He taught me that it is not what you say to people, but how you say it. He taught me how to be a great coach. He taught me to never stop learning. He taught me the value of family, even more than my own family did. I could go on for days about the lessons I learned from this great man.
I got the news of Rich's passing form his beloved wife Cheryl this past Saturday just hours after he passed while competing in an Ironman (like a triathlon) as I was attending a bench press seminar. A friend was sent down to the gym to have me get a hold of Cheryl. I was applying one of Rich's lessons; never stop learning, when I got the news.
I spoke with Rich just a few days before he left to compete and we talked about many things, including how he was in the best shape of his life and how I was going to return to weight lifting competition in October. I wished him the best and we made plans to have lunch when he got back. After I got the news of his passing a lot of things went through my mind, and one thing stood out more than anything, besides horrendous grief; I owed Rich a debt that could never be repaid and that he was one of the most important people in my life, and he was now gone.
A true sign of strength is letting people in your life know how valuable they are to you while they are still here. I was and still am very sad at Rich's passing, but I feel good about one thing. I let him know how important he was to me while he was still alive. Of course he knew it, but the fact that I told him left me with no regrets. A while ago, it was the anniversary of my grandfather's death, and my son asked me why I was so sad that day. I explained to him that it was a special day and the reason why I was sad is that I miss him every day and that I never told him exactly what he meant to me while he was alive. A few days after this, Rich and I were talking and I took the time to tell him exactly what he meant to me and how grateful that I was to him for all that he did for me in my life. I told him that when my grandfather passed I never told him these things and I didn't want to wait until it was too late to let him know the same things.
I'd like to leave you all with a few things that you can take away from my experience with Rich:
-never stop learning
-treat people well
-act with integrity
-keep your body and your spirit strong
-never, ever quit, no matter what at whatever you are doing
-be better today that you were yesterday.
If you try and do even one of these things, you will be stronger for it. Tell someone important to you TODAY what they mean to you. You will be stronger for it.
Rest in peace Rich. We will all miss you.

I never met Rich, but think of him and his family often. I was in the water at Nationals when the EMTs brought him to the dock. We treaded water as a team worked to bring him back. They were so attentive and worked so hard doing everything possible. It was very difficult to watch and women (45-49 age group) were moved, scared, and tearful. I can't imagine the pain the family has gone through, the wondering and wishing it was different. I know he was an amazing man from what I have read. I could see what amazing shape he was in and wanted the family to know that there was a peacefulness about him on the dock. I am so sorry for your loss and I will never forget him. I did a lot of praying during that awful swim and on the bike and run. I do think of you all often. I am so glad there is a wonderful race on 11/11 to celebrate him. Again so sorry for your loss.

Dear Angelo Family,
My sincere heartfelt condolences. Although I had only just met Rich in July at the Mass State Triathlon, I could tell he was passionate about anything he engaged in. We had communicated with each other through emails and phone calls throughout July and August in regard to Triathlon training and equipment. Rich was very excited to be attending USAT Ntl Championships and even more proud to have the Angelo family in tow. Through our discussions I could clearly see that Rich was a person who doesn't dabble, he's all in. His passion certainly shone through in our discussions which is how I'm sure Rich approached everything especially his family. I wish our meeting had been sooner.

My Father Richard Nicholas Angelo was our hero. Over the past few days I've come to find he was a hero for many. My most vivid memory of our Dad saving the spirit of somebody was a little boy named Fassel. One day he was busy working at the Karate Studio and a man walked in asking if he could buy a Karate Uniform for his nephew. Our father asked “sure but can I ask why”- and the man replied “my nephew Fassel loves Karate, but he is very sick with cancer”. Without hesitation our father gave him a uniform and offered his time to train his nephew privately. Fassel came to the studio every couple days to learn Karate from our Dad. As Fassel's sickness progressed Fassel wanted to give up because the treatments were so painful. Our father went to Fassel to encourage him not to give up; He asked Fassel if he was a fighter. Fassel decided to continue treatment because our Father could encourage anyone. Sadly Fassel lost his battle with cancer. My father felt with that kind of fight even with defeat deserved a black belt. My father sent a black belt engraved with Fassel's name to his parents. This inspirational story is only one of many about my father.
That is the kind of man he was and the kind of support he gave to friends. I use the word friend because everyone was a friend to this man. Our father was a friend, mentor, coach and competitor. He loved training and above all THE RACE. In the end he died going for it.
Seven months ago my father gave me away to the love of my life, and when we took that limo ride together to the church it was just the two of us. My father looked at me and asked me if it was everything I have ever dreamed of… and I looked back to him with my soul filled with happiness and my face filled with tears and I replied with Dad it is everything and more. We didn't need words because we had a strong bond. That day he stopped me and said don't cry because you look like a princess and for the first time I saw my father cry. We won't talk now.
For all the times we sat in silence Dad I want to tell you that you have overwhelmed me to the point that I have been speechless. The only reason I now have the strength to express my gratitude towards you is because you are not here. Here are the words that I could not say before; Dad you are my heart, my soul and my motivation. I adore you. I want you to know when we danced on my wedding day and you sang to me that was the best gift you have ever given me. You saw me first; you had me first; you loved me first.
Before our father got in the water that day he kissed the love of his life goodbye. Our mother and father had a love that would inspire anyone. My parents lived and breathed each other. Every day they woke up and lived like it was their last. My mother said to me “people keep saying what an amazing friend, uncle, brother, son or father he was…but do they know what it was like being his wife and what kind of husband he was. They had part of him but I had all of him”. Their last was their first August 18, 2000. Our parents taught us how to love, truly love. He showed us how to cherish our mother because he loved, and lit up when his mother, my nana Florence Angelo walked into the room. I know my father kept the last letter his father sent to him on his nightstand. His Father Anthony Angelo was a man of few words and in that letter his father told him he loved him. I also want to say how lucky he felt to have his brother Robert and his sister Donna & Susan. He was so proud of them. He loved being an uncle, great uncle and a friend. I loved watching my father around his family and my sister especially. My father is the only person that my sister would ever listen to. He inspired her to become a smart, compassionate, and gracious person. We would never make a decision that our father would not approve of and we never will.
My father had no regrets, and no enemies. If my father gave you advice, remember it because he always gave the best advice. If my father told you he loved you, believe it because he always spoke the truth. If you are searching for an answer do what he would do because he always makes the right decisions.
Richard Nicholas Angelo will be missed and but will never be forgotten.
Dad we love you and we will be at that finish line waiting for you. Go get it.

My father Richard Angelo was never one of those people who looked back and said, "I wonder if..." If I have a goal, I'll go out and set forth to achieve it. When something is your passion, it becomes everything. You put everything into it without hesitation. No questions. No doubts. Nothing to stop you. My father was my world and will always be my hero and inspiration throughout my life. Not a day will go by where I will not look to my father for guidance and inspiration. My father was a man who touched many lives and instilled hope and passion in each and every person he has encountered in his life. The two quotes my father always told me were; “greatness is not in never falling, but in rising after the fall”, and “If you want it, work for it.” His words will forever carry me through life and give me the drive and determination which was embedded into him. Dad I love you and miss you… you left us going for it. <3 See you at the finish line.

Rich,
I clearly remember the time you came into my life when you walked into the bike shop with Cheryl. Your smile and positive attitude was always contagious. As we became friends over the years and talked often about training and racing triathlons, you often asked about "the little things" that would make you a better triathlete. Focusing on these little things had always helped you achieve success in other sports and parts of your life. Looking back my friend, it was actually you who taught me about all the little things. The things that have made me a better person in life, family, selflessness, positive attitude and other areas of my life. Your lessons will never be forgotten. I'll do my best to teach them to others for the rest of my life.
Rest in Peace, Rich. I'll miss you very much.

To the Angelo family,
My deepest condolences. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Richard but I was there the morning of his passing. Our swim wave was in the water as the emt's brought him to the dock. Be assured our prayers never stopped. My friend Christine attended the wake and said you may, at some point, want to contact me. Please feel free to do that. When she described the wake to me it made me think of him riding around in heaven on his cervelo. I hope he podiums.

I met Richie 30 years ago in a hole in the wall karate school that later became a very large well respected karate school. That was Richie, always striving to do better for himself , his family and his friends. I have always looked up to him as my very dear friend and Sensie. This is a great loss for all of us. My sincere condolences to Cheryl and the entire Angelo family.

To the family and friends of Richard Angelo -
I did not know Mr. Angelo except as another triathlete, but I can echo the sentiments of the other ladies waiting in the water as he was brought into the dock - many tears were shed, many prayers were said and the camaraderie and support that is so prevalent in the triathlon community was amplified in a way I have never experienced at the start of a race. Please know that as much as he loved the sport of triathlon, it - and his fellow triathletes - return that love and will not forget him.

It is with much sadness that I read of the passing of this great man and my condolences go out to his family. I had the privilege of training under Richie for two and half years before moving to Florida in 1988, and the lessons I learned not only about martial arts, but also about life, have never been forgotten. I feel blessed to have known you. RIP Sinsei.

My deepest thought's and prayers go out to Rich " The Angel" Angelo's family and close friends at this time. He was a friend, colleague, and fellow athlete. He served many people in his lifetime, we all are grateful for those memories. Though, he may not be here physically, he is here daily in spirit serving at a higher level in a better place. A true warrior in this world, I will see you soon my friend.

Dear Susan and Angelo Family:
I learned of Richie's passing while traveling back from a soccer tournament this past weekend with my 13 yr old son. I was able to share with my son great memories I had of playing football with Richie at Malden, and what a great person and athlete he was. My sincere condolences to the entire family during this difficult time.

Rich Angelo was a man of character. Having him as a client was a complete pleasure and he quickly became a friend. He loved his wife and daughters with all his heart. The world would be a better place with more Rich Angelo's.

I met Rich but once, two weeks ago on the Gordon College track at 7:00 a.m. I was taken right away by his hard work and passion. Post-run, we chatted a bit, exchanged numbers, talked about his triathloning experience. We planned to swim in Gull Pond together, right near his new home. He listened intently as I shared that I was planning to do my first tri , in Ipswich. He was a wealth of information and willing to share his knowledge, not to brag, but to let me know how I could do my best, by learning "the little things" as he called them. I offer my condolences to the family and friends that Rich shared. I will never forget my new friend... who went away too quickly. Rich, you'll be with me Friday night.

Richie,
I did not have the privilege to have known you as long as I would have liked, but you instantly made a lasting impression on me. I can't remember a time that you didn't have a smile on your face and your calming presence always made you enjoyable to be around. Your drive, character and generosity led you to succeed at everything you did from business to sport to family and friends. Thank you for the impression you made on my brother, but also for making me part of your family as well. You will be missed but not forgotten.

If everyone in this world could have 2% of Richie's kindness and class, we would be living in Paradise. The most wonderful person I've ever met, I do believe he is sitting next to God.

Like so many I have such fond memories of Richie. We worked together at Rt 1 Racquet and fitness many many years ago. Although I hadn't spoken to him in a long time I have and will always consider him a dear friend. Reflecting back now I see how my time spent with him shaped me in many ways to be the person I am today. My thoughts of love and strength go out to his family and friends at this difficult and unimaginable time.

Dear family and friends of Mr. Angelo,
I was in the water waiting for my wave to go off when they brought Mr. Angelo in on the rescue raft. Please know that many, many prayers were said for him among the 45-49 year old women's age group while the medical personnel worked so hard to save him. It wasn't until later in the day that I learned of his passing. As a member of the triathlon community, I am so very sorry for your loss. I do not know you and I did not know Mr. Angelo, but it doesn't matter. He was one of us and I care deeply and am heartbroken by this tragedy.
With sincerest sympathies,
Jill Hartley Yokota
