ROBERT DUFFY Obituary

Duffy, Robert A. Retired President and CEO of Draper Laboratory, died Feb. 4, 2015, at the age of 93 years. Duffy graduated from the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School in 1942 and the Army Information School in 1947 before earning his B.S. in aeronautical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1951. He served in the Panama Canal Zone, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, and Vietnam, and retired from the Air Force in 1971 as vice commander of the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Organization. He received the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, the Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem with oak leaf cluster, and the Distinguished Service Medal. After retiring from the military, Duffy joined Draper in 1971 as Vice President, and became its first president and CEO in 1973 when the lab separated from MIT to become a not-for-profit corporation. In 1976, Duffy presided over the construction of a single facility that accommodated Draper staff who had been working in 14 buildings across Cambridge. The building was renamed for him in 1992. During Duffy's tenure as president, the lab made many significant contributions to the military's strategic missile fleet and began development of its micro-mechanical technology. Duffy also served on a number of advisory panels for NASA and the national security community. He received honors including the 1971 Gen. Thomas D. White U.S. Air Force Space Trophy from the National Geographic Society, given annually for outstanding contribution to American aerospace progress. Other awards included the Thomas L. Thurlow Award from the Institute of Navigation (ION) for work in the application of inertial guidance equipment to military vehicles. He was inducted into the Georgia Institute of Technology Engineering Hall of Fame in 1995. Duffy's first wife, Elizabeth Orr, predeceased him, as did two of their children: Marian Orr and Barclay Robert. He is survived by their children Michael Gordon, Judith Elizabeth, and Patricia Archer, as well as four grandchildren. He is also survived by his second wife, Jenifer Pickett, as well as her children: Laurie Moskowitz Corrois, Diane Lee Pickett, Carol Anne Belding, Mark Henry Pickett, and William Davis Pickett. He is also survived by her nineteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Naples, Fla. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Avow Hospice of Naples in Duffy's memory (see http://avowhospice.org/).

We knew Duff and his lovely family from the time he lived in San Pedro, California, many years ago. I married into the Phillips family all are now long deceased and in my memory ALL the Duffys were my very favorite family in every way for excellent reasons. Everybody was so interesting and fun! I also remember the famous fish chowder Duff used to make for special occasions which, for the uninitiated, was quite an experience. I would now hope the entire Duffy Familiy is thriving and healthy. And Im sure they all miss Duff every day. Laura and Richard Phillips, Solana Beach, California

I had the great honor of meeting with Mr. Duffy when I was organizing a protest against the nuclear arms race to be held outside Draper Labs on August 6, 1981. I really admired his honesty and compassion and willingness to meet.

Ed and I were saddened to learn of BG Duffys' death. He lived a long and full life and contributed so much to the scientific advancement in our country. His love of life and the ability to make all at ease was always evident while Ed worked with him at the Draper Labs when first in the USAF in the late 1960s. We were happy to know he continued always the loving family man until his death. We were richer for having known he and late wife, as a new couple to service life. His laughter and comraderie has stayed with us over a 49 year friendship. He would always encourage us to travel as often as we could, and to value our time together. So many good memories. Sending our profound sympathy to Jenifer and his entire family. Sincerely, LTC (USAF,ret) Edwin V Harrington,Jr and Elaine R. Harrington of Leland,NC

So sorry I could not be at Duff's memorial yesterday at Arlington National Cemetery.

I worked for Bob from 1977 until he retired. He was the best President the Lab ever had. He was on a first name basis with almost if not every employee here at the time.

Good luck and my best wishes to the entire family.

Both my son, Richard Phillips and I, Laura Phillips Davidson, both formerly of San Pedro, CA., offer our warm wishes for Duff and his marvelous family. Such wonderful times and memories for all the Phillips family.

Dear special Jenny, After learning of Bob's death I was able to pull up the obituary and wish so much I could attend his memorial tomorrow. Few of us who knew him at Tower Point would have dreamed that the lovable, gentle and friendly guy we all knew and loved had lived such an incredible life in service to his country. And none knew better than Bob how blessed he was in you, Jenny, especially through those last difficult years when I and so many others were blessed in your friendship.

Lovingly,

Ruth Witrak

Dear All,

Stan and I were sad to hear the news of Uncle Robert's passing, but what a fabulous life he lived. He worked hard and contributed much to his profession, he lived well and loved his family and his country dearly.

I have so many wonderful memories-grilled swordfish (still my favorite fish), early happy hours at the beach house in Florida after early morning bird watching in the parks, a rich hearty laugh and watching him with his sister (and my mother) Janie. Stan and I still cherish the wonderful letter he wrote about his time in Italy before our first visit to that country.

He was and will always be my favorite Uncle.

He will be missed by so many but he enriched the lives of those he touched. I will look forward to joining you in Arlington, please keep me posted.

Lots of love to all of you, Jane and Stan Hooker

Duff, as we all called him at the MIT LAB which became DRAPER LAB under Duff's leadership was the LAB's next President after DOC DRAPER, the LAB's founder. It is a great honor to have worked under Duff. He was the consummate Gentleman & helped us in a difficult time of transitioning from MIT ISTRUMENTATION LAB to DRAPER LAB. One of the best ways to thank him, was to name the building he helped build the DUFFY BLDG. May the Good Lord gve him a very special place in his new home. Bob LEGER
