1950 - 2024

HATHAWAY, Robert Wilbur III October 11, 1950 - March 10, 2024 Bob passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, after a period of failing health. He leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Vandewalle of Glendora, CA; his loving son, Matthew Hathaway, and his wife, Esther, of Duarte, CA; and his cherished granddaughters, Josie and Maribel, of Duarte, CA. He also leaves behind his sister, Elizabeth Bochman (Bob); and his brothers, William (Ginney Nelson), Thomas (Cathy), and James (Margaret). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mabel (Leather) Hathaway, Jr.

Bob was born in Fall River, MA, and graduated from Durfee High School in 1968. He continued his education at Southeastern Massachusetts University, where he received a BA in Sociology. After graduation, Bob began his long career at the Department of Transitional Assistance as a social worker. He later switched to data analysis and computer programming, before retiring in 2011. Bob was a lifelong Massachusetts resident (Fall River and Braintree) until moving to Glendora, California, in 2018, to live closer to his son's family.

Bob enjoyed many different activities over the years. He loved traveling in both the U.S. and foreign countries. Many hours were spent outdoors where he enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, and gardening. Indoors, he kept busy with cooking, baking, and canning. Bob loved trying new recipes to share with family and friends. He also loved music and was a lifelong fan of Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues. His depth of knowledge of music and band history was remarkable. Bob remained an avid and loyal Boston sports fan, even after his move to California.

But most of all, Bob loved his family and friends. He was always willing to help, whether it was household repairs or cooking for a party or sharing his music. He was devoted to his granddaughters and could not say no to their requests.

Bob's ashes will be Interred at a Graveside Service in the family plot at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River on July 26 at 10:30 AM.
