Once I remember how Robert told me a story about how he ripped a criminals wig off once and it was by total accident. He always was smiling and always called me big al, he called me this because I am one of his grand children.

My deepest sympathy on Bobby's passing. He was generous to, and supportive of, this reporter when he was Deputy Superintendent in Boston. When he took over as Chief in Lawrence, I happened to cover the ceremony and remember how moved he was when his father pinned on his new badge. We talked about that years later when we would see each other on the South Shore. Honorable, decent and strong as an ox. Many are diminished by his passing. Godspeed.

As a TV News Cameraman in the mid-1980's, I had the pleasure of dealing with Supt. Hayden when he was part of an undercover force patrolling the Boston Common. He was respectful to everyone whether it was friend or foe. A wonderful man. The world would be a better place if there were a few more people like Bob Hayden. Rest in Peace.

My best memories of Bob were at Bay State Winter Games at the Williams College skating rink. For several years he accompanied Katy for the weekend. On the last night of the competition he sat in the judges room talking to all of us.He also made sure he was available to help me carry my equipment out to my car. One year I was unable to be at the games as I was helping my daughter after she had surgery. She lives in Connecticut. He got my phone number and made a special call to me telling me how sorry he was. Bob was a great man.!

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Bob's family. My father Thomas Walsh worked with Bob in the late 60's and throughout the 70's with the TPF. I have many fond memories from my youth of my father and Bob sharing their passions for police work and working out. They ran and lifted weights together and worked anticrime in the 'combat zone.' He came to my dad's wake five years ago almost to the day of his passing. In my mind they both will always be the young, tough committed cops and fathers they always were. May he rest in Peace.

Several years ago Bob walked into my musical Diner in Cork,Ireland he asked for a cup of tea and enquired if I had The Platters singing "Smoke gets in your eyes",which I had. That was the beginning of a great friendship especially via the Internet. His bike trip around Ireland in the WINTER was a great story which Bob put to print, thankfully I still have my copy which was a masterpiece.I'm going to miss Bob,he was "one of a kind",so tonight I'll raise a glass of Jameson Whiskey to a dear friend Bob Hayden.Sleep well my friend, you've earned it. Bob was an incredible man. He was a true and dear friend to my Dad, Ralph DeStefano when they were both members of the Boston Police Department. He joined my family for many dinners and would tell us wonderful stories of his experiences. When our Mother passed he was asked to eulogize her and he articulated his closeness and dedication to our family. The DeStefano Family was so very fortunate to have known him. He enriched our lives and made the world a better place.

Many years ago, while he was off duty at the Hingham Hockey rink he ended upsetting next to my elderly mother who lived in Dorchester. Through their conversation she learned that he was a Boston Cop covering her area. She told him of some troubles that she was having with some neighborhood thugs. Bobby, without ever knowing my Mom prior, wrote down his work phone and home phone numbers and told her if she had any more problems to call his work number first and if he was off duty then to call him at home, telling her that he would get his people to help her right away. After that, he and his Officers made many passes by her home and pulled in to talk with her to ask how things were going. There were no more problems after these kids saw Bobby Hayden and his Officers stopping by Mom's house. He even had the Police Horses patrol her street. God bless him, Rest in Peace.

So sorry to hear about Bob Hayden. I saw then-Lieutenant Hayden every day as he would stop in the store I worked at in West Corner on his way to/from work. My father also served under him in the Boston PD for many years and said he was one of the most respected leaders in the BDP. He was a great guy who devoted his life to law enforcement. He will be missed.
