ROBERT GEORGE "BOB" ROBINSON M.D.

ROBERT ROBINSON Obituary

ROBINSON, Robert George "Bob," MD Passed away peacefully at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital on December 25, 2024. Bob was born May 22,1945, in Pittsburgh, PA. He grew up in suburban Wilkinsburg, PA, where he completed primary and high school. He was the president of his high school class and was the Drum Major of the school's marching band. Bob got his undergraduate degree in Physic Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. The following year attended Cornell University Medical College in NYC. Following graduation from medical school, he completed a medical internship at the Montefiore Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, NY. Bob completed his first year of a clinical psychiatry residency at Cornell University Hospital Westchester Division in White Plains, NY. While there, he met his wife, Gretchen, also working at the hospital at the time. The following year, as part of his military obligation, he spent two years in the Public Health Service doing brain research at the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C. He then completed his last two years of psychiatry residency at the John's Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, where he remained on the faculty in the Psychiatry department for fifteen years, becoming a full professor before the age of 40. While Bob was still in Residency, his two sons, Christopher and Jonathan, were born in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD. He was a wonderful and dedicated father who enjoyed spending time with and traveling with the family. Bob was known to be a reliably steady hand for family and friends alike. Continuing in academic medicine, in 1991 Bob became the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City Iowa, where he ran the department, taught medical students, trained post-doctoral fellows and continued his clinical research. He produced several hundred scientific publications and several books generated by his research related to stroke, depression, and traumatic brain injury. Bob later became a board-certified gerontologist, taking care of elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. He lectured extensively all over the world related to his research and received numerous honors and awards for his mentorship, as well as contributions to several professional organizations. Bob retired at age 71 and moved to Eastham, MA, to his beloved Cape Cod, with his wife, Gretchen. In retirement, he continued his passion for collecting wine, adding new vintages to his 40-year collection, from which he curated his best wines to share with his sons and his fine wine men's group. He enjoyed playing golf and pickleball, and was an active participant in his nonfiction history book group. He was an avid runner for 42 years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gretchen Robinson of Eastham, MA; his two sons, Christopher Robinson of Lexington, MA and Jonathan Robinson of Denver, CO. Also surviving are his daughter-in-law Neha Robinson; two grandchildren, Gyan Robinson and Kira Robinson, also of Lexington, MA. He is also survived by his sister Joan Robinson; and his niece Pamela Hothorn, both of Nashville, TN. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Alzheimer's Family Support Center of Cape Cod.

Remembering the opportunities to hear medical information about disturbances of the brain and more. A warm personality and a cheerful smile. I did not know of his death. Gretchen I am so sad about this news. I have been searching for quite a long time about this remarkable couple. Deep sadness to know about Bob´s death.

I considered Bob to be one of my best friends. In many ways he was a giant of a man. His research and published articles will be revered by the medical community for many years to come. I have a lasting impression of him sitting in the passenger seat of my convertible on October 23 this year. He had his baseball cap on and seemed to enjoy the sun and breeze as we drove to his last wine event with the Fine Winos Group that he founded. I will miss him like crazy. Above all he was a really nice guy.
