SAMUEL BEATTIE Obituary

BEATTIE, Samuel In Memory of Samuel Beattie Samuel Tyroler Beattie, 24 years old, of Duxbury, MA passed away tragically in the early morning of December 6, 2016 after he was struck by lightning after hiking and then camping, on Mount Warning, just south of Brisbane, Australia. At the time, he was on a one-year tour of Australia via campervan with his girlfriend and the love of his life, Michele Segalla, also of Duxbury, MA. While injured in the lightning strike, Michele is thankfully healthy and recovering with her parents, Chris and Debbie Segalla of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Sam is the son of Sarah and Marc Beattie, of Duxbury, MA, and the brother of Nick Beattie, of New York, NY. Sam most recently graduated from the University of Denver (spring of 2015) and joined UBS, the Swiss bank, as a Risk Analyst in New York City. After working there for a year, he and Michele made plans for a tour of Australia. Always the adventurer, Sam has traveled extensively, initially with his family to Paris, London and an extended stay in Rome, then on his own, doing conservation work inside Kruger National Park in South Africa, working with youth and assisting in the creation of a turtle nursery in Costa Rica, a winter as a "lifty" at the Canyons in Park City, Utah, as well as a semester abroad in Seville, Spain. Sam had a passion for adventure which included hiking to glacier lakes in the Rockies, skiing anywhere (preferably out West), and nearly any outdoor activity that included an authentic experience with friends. He loved Duxbury and was always on the water while home. During high school and in his early college years, Sam worked oyster farming on Duxbury Bay, which further enforced his love of the water, Duxbury, and oysters. Sam will be deeply missed by his family, Michele, friends, and the Brothers of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma. However, his faith in God overcomes death, and his family knows that love triumphs over grief and loss. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on December 17, 2016 at North River Community Church, 334 Old Oak Street, Pembroke, MA 02359. All family and friends of Sam are welcome. In loving memory of Sam, and his love for Sea Otters, please consider donating to Friends of the Sea Otter via https://www.razoo.com/us/story/Sambeattie (http://www.seaotters.org)

I want your family to know that we think and talk about Sam often, as an inspiration and great person. He was my son's friend and roomie. I also want to say how profoundly moved I was at the strength, spiritual wisdom and depth of honoring who Sam was at his service. Your loss is heartbreaking and while I don't know you, I pray for your comfort.

We are so sorry for the loss of Sam. We know he was a very special young man, so filled with light - the kind of soul this world sorely needs. (He was my son's roommate in Brooklyn.) Sending prayers for comfort and peace to all his family and loved ones.

My favorite memory of Sam and I was from last December. I had a very important big interview and Sam helped me study for it all night. When I woke up he snuck a post it on my door the read " you're a lion Ian and this city is a jungle go take what's your"! That kind of selfless devotion to helping the people around him was what Sam was all about.
