STELLA MING Obituary

MING, Stella Age 102, passed away on June 13, 2020. Born in Trinidad to Mary Scott and David Luke, she was one of eight children. Stella immigrated to the United States and married Chun T. Ming. She opened her own hair salon, Stella Ming Coiffeurs, on East 56th Street in New York City but always dreamed of opening a Chinese restaurant. In the early 1960's, she moved with her family to Madrid, Spain and partnered with her longtime friend, Jerry Morales, to open what became a renowned Chinese restaurant, the House of Ming. She later opened a Polynesian night club, the noted Bali Hai, and a second Chinese restaurant, Muñeca China. Stella returned to New York City in the 1980's to manage her office business, Parkeast 56. She enjoyed traveling and visiting family but derived her greatest joy from cooking West Indian food and spending time with her great grandchildren. Having celebrated her 100th birthday, she believed "every day is a gift." Stella will be deeply missed by her family and friends for her kindness, optimism, laughter, and love of family. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Raymond) Cheng of Madrid, Spain; three granddaughters, Lauren (Daniel), Carolyn (Fernando), and Sharon (James); five great-grandchildren, Alex, Ariel, Keren, Nick, and Jake; and numerous extended family members. All services were private.

First of all, our deepest hearted condolences to all the dear families for your loss of our dear Mama Ming. In our family she will always be in our hearts. She was one of the kindest, and most loving people persons that we have ever known. She would make anybody smile when she would approach them and was very elegant, caring, humble as well as a role model and she will be missed by us all. Mama Ming, may you rest in peace with our love. The Santiago's (Angel Sr, Maria, Madeleine, Deborah, Michelle, & Angel).

Maria and I met Stella Ming and Jerry Morales in 1966 when I was assigned then to Torrejon Air Force Base as a Firefighter. We were newlyweds just celebrating our first anniversary when we met them. It was like we had known them for a long time. Mama Ming as well as Jerry took us under their wing and became our foster parents overseas. We share many family moments together as well as special occasions. Mama Ming being an outstanding cook would at times cook and baked goodies for us at their residence. At their Restaurant The House of Ming they had a special spot for us to seat. During New Year and Special Holiday's, we were there as well. Mama and Raymond would host the customers and Jerry and Barbara would join us when possible. Another location that we would also visited frequently was the farm at La Moraleja and as handy man I was able to help Stella and Jerry in various chores around the farm.

By the second year Maria had baby girl who we named Madeleine. Jerry and Stella became her godparents. When she was about six months old we visited Jerry and Stella, mama would be so happy that she was dancing for us while Carolyn, Lauren and Sharon would play around her and us. Sometimes the girls would take turns to sit with her on the carpet floor. At the farm and by the pool they would also play with her while she was in her stroller. Mama would be with Maria and Jerry with me. Since we have so many memories to share during this period we would like to share them with the family at a later date. Pictures, videos

After three and a half years at Torrejon Air Force Base we departed and returned 20 years later to Torrejon Air Base. Having always a connection with Stella and Jerry we immediately informed them of the good news. This is when they got meet our other three children, (Deborah, Michelle, and Angel). Mama Ming, Jerry, Barbara and Ray again welcome us with open arms. It was like we had never left. Being overseas our four kids immediately started calling them: Mama Ming, Papa Jerry, Aunt Barbara and Uncle Ray. To date they still do.
Many memories to share with family at a later date with beautiful pictures.

We departed three years later but still connected to them through Mama Ming. We would call here periodically and also visited her in New York when she was back from Boston and again she would continue to spoil us with her motherly love and affection. Knowing as well that she loved us unconditionally it hurts to let her go but we know that she will be in Heaven where she belongs. We thank the Lord for sharing her with us. May she rest in peace. Love you always Mama Ming! You will not be forgotten!

Mama Ming was my Godmother. I was honored to have had her in my teenage years when I lived with my family [Angel & Maria Santiago & siblings] in Spain. She was an amazing influence to me...she was an amazing cook (her Almond cookies ), was very wise and confident, and her laugh was contagious! I have fond memories of time at La Finca, Muneca China and House of Ming. I was [and am still] in awe of her strength, determination and business savvy. She and my mother are strong influences I've held dear in my life and still resonates to this very day. REST in PEACE Mama Ming, thank you for your presence, I hope your loved ones all LIVE in PEACE. God Bless! Love, Madeleine [Santiago] Peterson
