I was so sad to hear of Steve's passing. At Smith he was my teacher, advisor and mentor, and later became a valued friend. He taught me a great deal, not just about China but also about how to be a scholar and teacher. He had a major impact on the course of my life. My condolences to Erika, Ken, and all the rest of the family.

I was saddened to learn about Steve's death. I knew him through my work at Smith College -- I recall interviewing him during the Tiananmen Square upheaval -- but also have known the family over the years. My condolences to Erika, Ken, Amanda, and their children.

Steve was the TA for the course "Soviet Foreign Policy" taught by Professor Alexander Dallin during my senior year at Columbia University (1966-67) when he was still a graduate student there. He was an inspiring teacher and mentor and a caring and wonderful human being. He taught in a manner that was more like a conversation with each student in the classroom than like a lecture in that he was looking at each student as he spoke to make sure that we were understanding what he was saying. He has always been a model for me of what a professor or teacher should be. He was one of the high points of my undergraduate experience at Columbia. While my wife and I were in Cambridge last year, I was so happy to meet and visit with Steve for the first time since my senior year 57 years ago. He has always inhabited my fondest memories of my college years, and I will be sad with the knowledge that he is no longer among us.
