SY RABOY Obituary

RABOY, Sy Insurance Executive and Philanthropist Beloved husband of Debby (Deborah) Raboy for sixty-two years, passed away peacefully at home in Boston on January 20, 2019. Sy, born on May 20, 1936, in New York City to Rose and Murray Raboy, lived a life full of love, success and perseverance. He graduated from Brandeis University, where he met and married Debby. A successful career in the insurance industry took the couple and their growing family across the country with stops in San Francisco, Detroit, and Los Angeles, before making his way to the headquarters of Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company (CML) in Hartford, Connecticut, as Senior Vice President. Within a few years, Sy was named the President of CML. During his time in Hartford, Sy was actively involved in the community as President of the Greater Hartford Arts Council, board member of Hartford National Bank, and its successors and of the University of Hartford. He participated in Leadership Greater Hartford, and was a member of Temple Beth Israel, Tumblebrook Country Club, Hartford Golf Club and The Hartford Club. He was a fellow of Brandeis University. Following his years in Hartford, Sy and Debby completed the circle of their travels with a move to Boston, as Sy took a position as Deputy General Manager of the United States for Sun Life Insurance Company. With his return to Boston, Sy became actively involved as President of the Boston Center for Adult Education, and with the Brandeis University Adult Education program. He was an avid supporter of the Pine Street Inn and Temple Israel. Of all of the blessings which life brought to Sy, his favorite ones were his family and close friends, whom he taught, coached, encouraged and loved fiercely. In addition to his wife Debby, Sy is survived by his children Adam and his wife Amy Raboy, his daughter Alyce, and her husband Charles Alfano, and his son James and his wife Ellen Raboy. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alexandra and Christopher Saltis, Harry and Jenna Raboy, Elizabeth Raboy, Mason Raboy, Lewis Raboy, Nicholas Alfano and Olivia Alfano, and his great-granddaughter, Evelyn Saltis. The family will welcome friends at Sy and Debby's home at 220 Boylston Street in Boston, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Temple Israel in Boston, Massachusetts, followed by his burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Suffield, Connecticut. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Charlie and Alyce Alfano, at 4 Woodbridge Drive in Suffield, on Wednesday evening, January 23, immediately following the burial. The family will also sit Shiva at Sy and Debby's home in Boston on Thursday evening, January 24, 2019, and Sunday, January 27th, at James and Ellen Raboy's home in White Plains, NY. Donations in Sy's memory may be made to The Raboy Family Scholarship at Brandeis University, or Compassion and Choices in Portland, Oregon.

I still think of him to this day. I worked in the President and CEO office at Connecticut Mutual for eight years. He was a very kind person and a man of class. Carol

In 1966 Sy came to Adrian College and hired me as his first agent in his scratch agency in Southfield, Michigan. As its been 54 years I still remember Sy as a wonderful and kind gentleman and I am proud to have known him.

Suzanne and I (Myles Connell) along with Cindy and David Ward first met Debby and Sy at a UAHC convention in San Francisco. The Raboys wanted to talk to West Hartford, CT locals about life in the Hartford area because Sy had been asked to become president of CML and the Raboys were considering the move.
But the job offer was still top secret. The Connells and the Wards will never forget the look on Sy's face when he learned that I worked for Cliff Walker, the Comptroller at CML at the time.
Sy swore us to secrecy until a decision could be announced. I went back to work for a few days of uncomfortable silence until he finally accepted the job. He and Debby moved to town and a fond friendship began for us all.
May his memory be for a blessing.

Debby, please accept our sympathy on Sy's Passing.I met
Sy by being his classmate in the first ALF class in Htfd.We became friends and Sy became a very strong supporter of the police including his service on the Ct.Police Foundation Board.I enjoyed the times I got to spend with Sy and it was a loss to us when he left Hartford. We both enjoyed the times we spent with you and Sy..Unfortunately we are out of the area right now so we can't express our sympathy in person but know that Sy will be well remembered by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.We hope that the memories you have will carry you and your family through this difficult time.

Adam Raboy:

In the summer of 1979, I had the opportunity to work with you on a political campaign in Hartford, Connecticut for a candidate for City Council. I enjoyed the time I spent working with you as the campaign coordinator. Your kindness and encouragement to meant a lot before I went to college in the fall of 1979. I also remember the time that you took to your home and introduced to me your grandfather, and the other members of your family for lunch.

I realize now that the kind, and generous person you were then, and now, the successful businessman you have become, and the humanitarian you also have become were due to the influence of your father who was also a kind, generous, caring, and successful business person, and "great" example of what a father should be to his family.

I express my condolences to you and your family for the loss of your
your father. The world has truly lost a "Great human being!

I worked in the office of the President and CEO at Connecticut Mutual for 8 years and in that time had the privilege to know Mr. Raboy. I admired him as a man with class and kindness. My condolences to his family. I will have him and you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Debby we never met but I am a close friend of Bonnie Angus. She introduced me to Sy because I had cancer and Sy and I sat with each other for 8 weeks while we went through radiation. He was my buddy. We talked a lot about what we were going through and really had a connection in that way. I really appreciate our friendship and thought he was a wonderful person. Bonnie called to say he had passed. I am so sorry and will never forget the encouragement we gave each other. I will miss him and wanted to tell you how happy I am that I got a chance to know him. He was very special. Hope you are doing ok and maybe some time we can meet. I would like that.
