TARVIS HINTLIAN Obituary

HINTLIAN, Tarvis Harootunian Born on November 3, 1922 in Millbury, MA, died peacefully in her sleep on February 24, 2022. She is survived by her four children and their spouses Andrea and Thomas Mendell, Varney Hintlian and Martha MacAuslan, Holly and Harold Knight and Frederick and Alicia Hintlian; her six grandchildren Lauren Mendell, Sara Hintlian, Andrew Hintlian, Julia Hintlian, Olivia Hintlian, and Tarvis Hintlian and her caregiver Doris Kotei. Tarvis was predeceased by her husband Vahan Hintlian and a grandson, Alexander Mendell. Coming from a humble farming family, Tarvis married into the Hintlian family that founded Cambridge, MA based Deran Confectionery Inc. that grew to become one of the nation's largest general line confectionery companies before it was sold to Borden, Inc. in 1970. Tarvis and Vahan lovingly raised four children in whom they instilled values and wisdom and that helped each to succeed personally and professionally. In addition to her passions for oil painting, tennis and cooking, Tarvis highly valued her Armenian heritage and was a strong advocate for the humane treatment of animals and helping the less fortunate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Trinity Armenian Church, Cambridge, MA, The Humane Society or the Arthritis Foundation. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, March 1st at 11:00 AM at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church, 145 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment to follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

I last saw Tarvis and Varney in Atlanta in the 1970s. We are close cousins. My late brother, Henry, (1929-2023) and I (1931-) visited the Harootunian's family farm in 1944 & 1945 as young teenagers. What a wonderful family that treated us like their own. Tarvis was just as beautiful then as the picture in the obit. So was her younger sister Betty ,and older sister, Alice. I had a crush on the girls. Tarvis and Betty work around the farm and Alice was more the housekeeper. "Auntie", her mother, was always hugging and kissing the two of us. What great memories. Tarvis was sweet but tough at the same time. Betty was with us more and a tomboy. I am the last of 6 children living. My mother (Elizabeth) died in 1948 of pneumonia and father (Simon) in 1968 of prostate cancer, So, i am the last of our Richmond family. God bless this wonderful woman, Tarvis. I loved her.
