TERRY MOOR Obituary

MOOR, Terry Martin With great sadness, the Moor family announces the passing of Terry Martin Moor of Stockbridge, MA, on March 17, 2023. Terry made his mark on the world with a quiet confidence, an incisive mind, and an off-beat yet playful sense of humor. Terry was a devoted husband, father, and friend, as well as an accomplished architect, teacher, and author. He enjoyed exploring the world around him, both locally, through involvement in his community, and globally, through his extensive travels. His inquisitive mind led him to author books on varied topics, including architecture, cooking, and local history, and to other passions, like landscape design. Terry was a loving husband and he and Susan shared true collaborative effort in designing multiple homes and planning adventurous trips. They were ideal travel partners, ever-ready to explore a new corner of the world together. Terry, son of Theodric Edwin Moor Sr. and Virginia Moor, was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. As a youth, he attended St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin. Terry gravitated towards academic fields involving visual and spatial skills, and in 1965 he earned his B.A. in Architecture at the University of Texas, Austin. In 1966, he joined the Peace Corps in Tunisia, supporting the developing nation's efforts at city planning and urban development. He would proceed to earn his Masters of Liberal Arts at Harvard University in 1989. Following a successful career managing his private architectural design firm, he taught Architecture at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He was a popular professor with a reputation as a fair, but strict, grader. He rose in the ranks of school administration to become Department Head and Dean of the Department of Architecture, though his passion remained in the classroom. He was an early enthusiast of computer-aided design, and he developed and directed a beloved study abroad program that invited students to learn about architectural design in the south of France. In his retirement, Terry designed The Scotland House, an adult day health center for the Thompson Senior Center in Hartford, VT. Terry possessed a keen eye for design that lives on in the houses he built and inhabited in Sherborn, MA, Tortola, BVI, Cambridge, MA, Westport, MA, Woodstock, VT, and Stockbridge, MA. He had a gift for creating welcoming homes with intuitive design that fully take advantage of their surroundings. His love for creating sustainable living spaces that draw inspiration from the local environment lives on in his book: "Reinventing an Urban Vernacular: Developing Sustainable Housing." Terry is survived by his wife, Susan; his children, Katherine and Benjamin (Rula); stepchildren, Emily (Andrew) and William (Leslie); and beloved grandchildren, Ava, Owen, Vivian, Sam, Elliot, Tobin, Fayden, Hunter, Quinn, Emmy, and Phoebe. He was predeceased by his brother, Theodric ("Ted") Edwin Moor Jr., in 2015. He will be forever remembered for the joy he brought family and friends through his ready wit and loving support. There will be a memorial service later in the spring on April 29, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the First Congregational Church, 4 Main St., Stockbridge, MA 01262. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Terry's name to The People's Pantry, PO Box 1115, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
