THOMAS DIMEO Obituary

DIMEO, Thomas Paul Veteran, Construction CEO Dimeo, Thomas Paul, of Providence, RI and Naples, FL. It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Thomas P. Dimeo on the evening of May 18th at the side of his wife and constant companion, Lorraine Sanderson Dimeo, with whom he proudly and gratefully built a wonderful life. The youngest child of Joseph Dimeo and Levia Storti Dimeo, Tom was born on October 21, 1930 in Providence, RI and spent his early years in Edgewood, graduating from Cranston High School in 1948. Tom's inherent values of hard work, humility and kindness spanned every facet of his life, both on a personal level, where his sense of humor and gregarious laugh proved infectious to the countless friends, family members, neighbors, and acquaintances, and to his professional career at the helm of Dimeo Construction Company, the family business Tom's father, Joseph, founded in 1930. Following his graduation from Brown in 1952, and a little more than a year before the Korean War came to an end, Tom served for two years in the United States Navy as a lieutenant. Among his posts, Tom held commissions aboard the Haskell-class attack transport, and the USS Latimer, in the Atlantic Theater. He often recalled how his Navy experiences helped to shape an ever-present and optimistic perspective of the future and a mindset that you can't change the past, so don't worry and keep looking forward in life. Later in 1954 Tom began his career at Dimeo. With his brother Joseph and upon the passing of their father Joe in 1961, both brothers began to lead the company. By the early 1970's Dimeo had grown to work throughout New England and as the industry transitioned from conventional general contracting to construction management, Dimeo was at the forefront of this shift and being recognized to this day by Engineering News-Record (ENR) among the top commercial construction management firms in the United States. Under Tom's stewardship, Dimeo was instrumental in growing its presence in Boston and surrounding communities. Construction of numerous assignments for clients including: Harvard University, Brown, and Yale, UMASS Amherst, MA Department of Transportation (headquarters), Brooke Courthouse, Prime Computer, Raytheon, Digital Equipment, New England Telephone, as well as the Natick Collection, Boston City Hospital, are among a long list of projects and ongoing presence to this day. Tom also founded Dimeo Properties, a real estate services firm that also helped shape skylines throughout New England, including several parcel assemblages in Boston and other locals including, International Place, Amica Insurance and community housing projects throughout Boston and various Massachusetts suburbs. His business acumen also led to the development of Chapman Equipment Company, which became one of the region's leading providers of aerial lifts. Through all his professional success, Tom never lost sight of the importance of giving back. He was enormously generous with his time, resources, and ideas, serving as a director or trustee of numerous organizations and supporting nonprofits throughout the region including United Way, NCCJ, New England and RI Public Expenditures Council, Save the Bay, among many others. Brown University also held a special place in Tom's life during and after his years on campus. An Economics graduate, member of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program, and a member of Delta Upsilon, all through his career Tom stayed close to Brown serving on the President's Leadership Council, as an Alumni Marshal, a member of Pacesetters, the Brown Sports Foundation, Brown's Navy Club and as a Brown Alumni services volunteer. Despite everything Tom was able to build, nothing made him more proud than his family. He was ever inspired by the character and accomplishments of his sons, daughters, and their families, Paul, and Brad; daughters, Lee, and Nina; daughters-in-law, Teresa, and Kim; and son-in-law, Steven Winoker. Tom could often be found enjoying time with family and friends, from the pool in East Greenwich and beaches in Greenhill and Narragansett, sporting contests in Boston, to the ski slopes in New Hampshire & Vermont, sailing Narragansett Bay and golf in New England and Florida. In addition to his wife "Sandy" of more than six decades, his children and their spouses, Tom is survived by his sister, Eleanor Dimeo Bolton, and by his grandchildren, Kevin Dimeo (predeceased), Molly Dimeo, Blakely Dimeo, James Coffey, Damon Coffey, Elliot Winoker and Charlotte Winoker, along with multiple generations of cousins, nieces, and nephews. A private Funeral Service was held, and a Memorial Celebration is being planned for later this summer.
