Vincent CELESTE Obituary

CELESTE, Attorney Vincent J. Of Kissimmee, Florida, formerly of Stoneham and East Boston, Massachusetts passed away on January 26, 2015 in his 91st year. Beloved husband of Marie (Gomes) Celeste with whom he shared 69 years of marriage. Loving father of James Celeste and his wife Tammy, Jean, Marie, and Philip. Dear brother of Albert and Salvatore Celeste and the late Mary Piazza, and Gaetano, Angelo, Charles, and Joseph Celeste. Cherished grandfather of Autumn, Brianna, Helena, Philip Jr., Isabel, Emily, Oliver Celeste, Jennifer, William Jr., and Celeste Gregorio, Sofia and Christian Celeste Tate, and great grandchildren Vivianna, Angie, and Philip. His parents were immigrants Philip and Josephine Celeste who came from Italy and settled in Boston, MA. He leaves behind a memorable lifetime of accomplishments. Attorney Celeste was a graduate of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy class of 1945. He was a veteran of World War II and served with distinction aboard the SS McDowell which was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on December 16, 1943. He was a member of the Tin Fish Club and in 1965 was awarded the Meritorious Alumni Service Award as a graduate who best exemplifies the finest tradition of the Corps- Acta Non Verba by rendering meritorious service to the purposes and tradition of the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation. Attorney Celeste was a graduate of Suffolk Law School in Boston, MA and successfully built his own law firm and practiced law at 1 Court St. and later at 53 State St. Boston, MA. He was a member of the Bar Association in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and he was admitted and tried cases before the United States Supreme Court. He served as Secretary to Massachusetts Republican Governor Christian Herter. He was a Republican candidate for Congress against John F. Kennedy, and in 1958 was the Republican nominee for Massachusetts US Senate against the then incumbent Sen. John F. Kennedy. Attorney Celeste was also a Republican candidate for Massachusetts Attorney General. He was a life long member of the Republican Party of Massachusetts, who dedicated years of service to the Party. Family and friends will honor Vincent's life by gathering Friday February 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Vazza's "Beechwood" Funeral Home, 262 Beach Street, REVERE and again at 9 a.m. Saturday morning before leaving in procession to St. Anthony's Church Revere for a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in his honor at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Lindenwood Cemetery Stoneham. I am sad to hear of Vincent's passing. It was always a pleasure to meet with him over the years and try to match wits (unsuccessfully). He was a good man and will be missed. My sympathies to Marie, Jim and the family. Bob D'Ambrosio
