WILLIAM CARR Obituary

CARR, William A. 1935-2022 Former Medford city councilor, beloved longtime Medford teacher and guidance counselor William A. Carr passed away peacefully at his home in Medford, MA, on September 20. He was 87 years old. Bill was born in 1935 in Cambridge, MA and moved to Medford in 1947. Bill's lasting legacy is his extensive service to his community and country. Throughout his entire life, Bill was a leader in countless community and sports organizations. After graduating from Boston College High School in 1952 and Boston College in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Bill's life of service began in the US Army from 1957-59, where he was a soldier of the Cold War serving in Oberursel, Germany at the US 513th Military Intelligence Division. Returning to Medford, Bill received his Master of Education from Boston State College and soon found a teaching job in 1961 at the Lincoln Junior High School in Medford, where he met the love of his life, fellow teacher Janet Hamilton. They were married on December 28,1963 at St. Luke's Church in Belmont, MA. Bill and Janet were married for 45 years until her passing in 2009. Bill is survived by his children, William A. Carr, Jr., and his wife Beth (Kelley) Carr of Medford, MA, Douglas Carr and his wife Donna Laquidara-Carr of Medford, MA, Maura (Carr) Rauseo and her husband Keith Rauseo of Tewksbury, MA, and Gregory Carr and his wife Jessica (Holt) Carr of Lexington, MA. Seven grandchildren also survive Bill - Jefferson Rauseo and his wife Coryana (Prendable) Rauseo, Hayley Carr, Matthew Rauseo, Benjamin Rauseo, Kelley Carr, Nolan Carr, and Daniel Carr. Bill became a great-grandfather in 2021 with the birth of Samuel Rauseo. Bill was predeceased by his wife Janet (1940-2009), brother Francis Carr. Jr. (1929-2011) and sister Eleanor (Carr) McCarron (1932-2021). Bill is also survived by his younger sister Janet (Carr) Hart, with whom he shared a close and supportive relationship for his entire life right up until his passing. Bill was a sports guy his whole life. He played basketball, baseball and volleyball growing up and later coached football, basketball, West Medford/Hillside Little League and American Legion Baseball. He loved watching Boston sports and had Celtics season tickets for the Larry Bird era, Red Sox season tickets in later years, and attended many Boston College football games. Bill was active in St. Joseph's Church and was a major contributor to the Malden Irish-American Association, where he helped organize events, and served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice- President, and President. Bill wrote the first history of the Malden Irish-American Association in 1981. Bill taught for thirty-seven years in the Medford School System at the Lincoln Junior High and at Medford High School from 1961-1986, primarily teaching English. In 1987, Bill moved to the guidance department, where he brought innovative ideas and initiatives to the department. Bill was awarded the Keys to the City of Medford in 1995 at his 60th birthday party in recognition of his longtime service and contributions to Medford. After retirement, Bill's next step was local politics. In 2001, Bill was elected to the Medford City Council and served two terms. Bill was a soldier, husband, father, teacher, coach, guidance counselor, city councilor, and a good citizen of Medford. He will be greatly missed. Bill Carr: "Once a friend, always a friend."

Bill became a virtual member of the Barringer household and family during our youthful summers together at Nuttings Lake in Billerica MA, and remained a dear, admired, and admiring friend throughout the decades that followed.

Those were summers of the imagination when, day by day, we sought adventure, pleasure, and recreation largely free of adult supervision and on our own - in the woods, on farm fields, in the water, and at the local skating rink and sweet shop for long hours at a time.

The friendships built along the way endured, only strengthened by Bill´s marriage to his beloved and fabulous Janet and their annual visits from Medford to the Barringer 3-decker in Charlestown on Bunker Hill Day. And so friendship became a love that endured for a lifetime, for an eternity.

Requiescat in pace.
