To Hap Poneleit Family
Just a few memories to help put a smile on your face in the time of saddness. Hap and my father J R "jimmy" Philpott were close friends. He was part of the Sandslingers and to this day I remember, My Mother and daddy attending the Halloween Partie every year. Until my father's untimely death in 76'. I was young but was waiting for my turn to attend too. which of course never happen. But the memories are still tucked away. I am sure you will never know how many people your Dad Father Grandfather Great Grand Father and most of all friends to all he has touched. I hope there a motorcycle for him in Heaven

Hap was a man with a big heart. He treated all the people that work for him as family. Larry and I have know Hap for 40 years. Bunny was like a mother to me and Hap treated us like we were as part of the family. We will realy miss seeing him and talking to him when we come down. We had a lot of fun with Hap and Bunny at the Sandslinger runs and meeting and other events we went to with them. Are thoughts and prayers are with the Family.

There will be a large hole in the motorcycle industry left by the passing of Hap. He was a truely one of a kind supporter who always did what was best for his customers and the motorcycle industry as a whole. A true motorcycle icon has left us for the great motorcycle garage in the sky. God Speed Hap.

We moved to Sarasota almost nine years ago, and, after convincing my husband he really didn't want a Harley, we wandered over to Hap's. Well, of course, we were treated like royalty by Hap and his staff and we got our Shadow. But I will never forget Hap telling my husband he couldn't take it out of the shop until he (Hap) was convinced that my husband could handle the bike...he (Hap) took him out into the parking lot and grilled and tested him. From that day on, we knew that we had "wandered" to the right place. We will never forget Hap, and we send our thoughts and prayers to his family and to those who were privileged to have known him better than we. May his legacy live on, may he rest in peace, and may all who knew him "ride on"!

Hap was a great man. Everytime I went into Haps he knew who I was he would say hello there Schmucker. He was as sharp as a tack. My Uncle works at Haps, my brother and my sister also worked at Haps. My Father always rode motorcycles from Haps and so I grew up riding motorcycles from Haps also. I would not change that experience for the world. I loved to see Hap riding his 3-wheeler around town with the walker on back it made me smile. Ride on Hap and please say hello to my dad for me.

The first time I met Hap was about 3 years ago, give or take a little. I was in the shop to by a bike. As we sat down to talk about it, he said, "Son, you look tired". Not wanting to talk much about it I just said, " Yeah, I don't sleep very well sometimes". He looked me right in the eyes for a full minute, and said, " There's only a few reasons why a man shouldn't sleep right. One is something he's done. The other is something he's gonna do. You can't do much about the past. So just let it go. The future will work itself out". I just sat there amazed. It was like he knew exactly why I don't sleep well. It wasn't till just recently I found out that he was a decorated combat veteran. You did know, Hap. You've been there...and back. I think about those words around 4am when I'm up watching tv. Then I go to bed. He helped me so much, and he didn't even know it. Thank you Hap. You'll be missed. My deepest sympathies to the whole Poneleit family.

I came to Sarasota in mid 60s from Calif out of the USAF. I rode HDs, BMW, Hondas. Hap's was the only dealer I bought a bike from. "Big Daddy" watched me go from 1%er to Christian biker. Once when I was with my kids, they were about 12 or so, he took us in the office and told them about me. Hap never forgot your name. He was "Big Daddy" and yes I Ride. Blessings on all he touched and on his family, "Chrome"

There is so much to say about this man that I am sure you know what a icon great father and a great grandfather he was.Me and my family has know Hap for 40 + years I remember to this day the riding track he made behind the business and the money and time he put into letting all the kids race for him. He was a man that you could always go to to find out answers no matter how busy he was and he was always busy took time to not only answer the question for you but show you how to get that answer and fix the problem. This is a man that started out with not a lot but built it up to be the best Honda place in Sarasota but Hap was still Hap always on the gold wing motorcycle and always a smile for anyone that came to the shop. This was and always will be a great man i know you are up there with my family and with Bunny smiling down and watching out for us all like you have for so many years. Thank you for letting me be your daughter-in-law. I will never forget everything you did for me. I remember working at the shop and a customer coming in the door and saying "Mr Hap, I can't make my motorcycle payment this week, I promise I will make it up" and I watched Hap take the money out of his pocket and give it to the customer so he didn't fall behind on his bike payments. I can't tell you how much respect I had for you. You where absolutely the most generous and giving man I have ever met. I love you so much. I'll miss going by the shop to tell you I love you and you telling me all about your awesome grandchildren. I am so happy for you that you got to go home to Bunny. I always enjoyed seeing him around town riding he latest Honda or other cool used bike he's taken in.

Dad,I am going to miss you so much. I am forever greatful for everything you did for all of us. You were such a very smart and special man and the best Dad any girl could ever have. Thank you for teaching all of us how to ride a motorcycle when we were kids because it is so much fun. I promise we will always wear a helmet like you ask. Thank you for being by my side and convincing the school board it was ok for a girl to ride a motorcycle to school. Speaking of school thank you for always making sure I could not go anywhere until I did my school work and read my books. You were right it did pay off when I got older. Thank you for believing in me and convincing me to go back to schooland get my insurance license so I could help our customers with their motorcycle insurance needs. Thank you for teaching me good values and to believe in people and give everyone a second chance to do right. Thank you for understanding my love for BMX and allowing me time off to be with BMX chldren and watch them excel.
Thank you for all the love you gave all of us.
Dad, you have been the pioneer in our town for the motorcycle business. And you were right this is the best place to live and raise a family. I am really glad that I was born into your family. You have taught us to work hard and love one another. We have always just wanted to make you as proud of us as we are of you.

Mr. Poneleit was a true southern gentleman; respectful, polite, gracious, and kind.
Hap sold me my first motorcycle at 14. Little did I know years later my Aunt Nancy would become his fiancee. At one of our family gatherings he and Aunt Nancy, who I never thought I would see ride on a motorcycle, showed up his three wheeler. I know he did a lot of talking to make that happen! That day Hap gave me the honor of driving it and giving everyone a ride. It ended up being the highlight of the party.
We were proud to have him in our family and will miss his presence.
God Bless Aunt Nancy and the Poneleit family.

Hap was a great influence on my life. In 1955 (I was 14) I stopped by the shop almost every day to look at the bikes but could not afford to buy one. Our deepest condolences go out to All of You. I first met Hap in the early 70's when I started riding on my '67 S90, and needed some parts. Hap was there to give me some advice on how to tune it up, and I never forgot this great man. In the following years we were lucky to be able to spend time with him as members of the Gulf Coast Riders, and will never forget the smile on his face as he looked at Lori's Super Magna I had restored for her as he told us stories about this model. Hap will be greatly missed, but he leaves a wonderful legacy. Over the years, Hap and his extended family have established and continue to sustain important philanthropic projects -- most recently fund raising for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Yet, when other motorcycle clubs and competitive dealerships held charity fund raising events, Hap and his people were the first to contribute time and money -- knowing 'what goes around, comes around'. That Hap had the ability to bring out the best in others is a true testiment to the man and the values he held near and dear.

What a wonderful, full life Hap had and I am sure he will ride on up! May all of you celebrate his life with great pride and love. He will be missed, but what a legacy he left. My sympathies are sent your way.
