Doug Schembri Obituary

World-renown horseman Doug Schembri died Tuesday morning while working on his 60-acre Myakka City farm. He was 61.

Mr. Schembri, who owned Char-O-Lot Ranch with his wife Susan, was fixing a water pump at about 9:30 a.m. when he collapsed and fell into a nearby pond. The cause of death was heart disease.

Mr. Schembri is survived by his wife, Susan, and children Sean, 23, of Myakka City, and Jenifer, 38, of Sarasota.

In a statement released to the Bradenton Herald on Wednesday, son and daughter called their father the finest horseman in the equine community.

"He was admired and respected by all who knew him," they wrote. "What people may not realize is that he had an amazing commitment to his family - to his wife and his children. No matter what, we came first."

Throughout his more than 40 year career as a horse breeder, trainer, rehabilitator and salesman, Mr. Schembri won national and international championships for his Quarter, Appaloosa and Paint horses.

Friends and family described him as a humble, hard-working equestrian, never seen without sporting his favorite brown cowboy boots, T-shirt, jeans and Char-O-Lot baseball cap.

His horses were treated like royalty, said veterinarian Bill Whitler, who has worked at Char-O-Lot with Mr. Schembri for about five years. "He was passionate and compassionate about them."

To horse owners across the county, he was a friend.

As of Wednesday, funeral arrangements were pending.

I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Doug Schembri. He as well as Char-O-Lot Ranch have done wonders for The Appaloosa Industry. He and Sue were always so kind to me in my days of showing Appaloosa's back in the days of The Everglades ApHc, Tropical ApHc, & many more. They were not my trainers, but, they always, always treated all exhibtors and fellow horsemen with respect. May God be with you Sue, Jennifer, & Sean. RIP DOUG, you will be missed.

This is such a blow, but I don't know how this would come any easier to anyone. Working for char-o-lot was some of the best years of my life and I'm so glad no one can take that from me. I miss all of you and Sean I still consider you one of my dearest friends and wish I saw you more. Also mr. Doug and you mrs. Sue were some of the most important people in my young life, and have learned so much from you both. Your hard work was and is a huge inspiration on my drive in the horse world. I hope to follow in your footsteps some day. I wish I was there to help in anyway I could and just to give you all the biggest hug I could give. I think about you on a day to day basis and I understand how difficult this all is. If you ever need anything I'm a phone call and a plane ride away. You were a second family and mentors to me and I could never really tell you how I feel. But don't worry he's propped up a buckett just outside heaven waiting on all of you. Deeply miss you all and my deepest smpothy goes out to you.

In 1996, I flew from Los Angeles to Orlando to accept the Supreme Champion #6 for my mare, Let's Fly. I was alone and wound up sitting with the Schembri family, who everyone knew of. They made a huge deal out of my mare's award and comments about her few appearances at Nationals and Worlds that showed they really did remember me. Doug had a knack for making everyone, even a backyarder like me, feel special. It made the evening truly memorable for me, one of the best memories of my life. (I used to be Woodman, then Morgan)

My Deepest thoughts and prayers are with your family in your times of greif and sadness. I wish I could help you as much as yor family helped me......My first horse was Char-o-lot bred out of Kelo's Connection, He was my best friend.....When my mom died it was that horse that gave me the strength to get through it......It was like Sue & Doug's compassion was bred in that horse. Throughout the years as i've grown older I have always admired Char-o-lot For there horses, being raised to know pretty is as pretty does...Your family has combined the two, and Have given many people great gifts like mine I'm sure. Now as a mom.... I have a mare that has graced Doug's hands a many of times, And As I worked cows on her friday, I could just imagine The smile that he always carried, and how he never met a stranger. He was a true horseman and family man alike. His Legacy will live on! May God be wit you Mrs Sue, and keep you strong, So you can keep Jennifer and Sean strong aswell...You are in our hearts, and prayers...Deanna(Boyd)Kersey

Still in a state of disbelief over Doug's passing. My heart still aches for you Sue, Jennifer and Sean and everyone at Char-O-Lot. Growing up in the Appaloosa industry Doug was bigger than life... a sort of "idol" if you will. God's plans are certainly strange as he gave me the opportunity after 25 years being away from the Appaloosa industry to work with Doug and his family again. I truly looked forward to coming to Char-O-Lot every month and visiting and listening to Doug tell of his plans for things coming up in the future. He had such GREAT ideas! I'm sure he'll be working on lots more in HEAVEN. From all of us at DAC Vitamins and Minerals, we will sorely miss one of our greatest ambassadors Doug Schembri!
