Harry Kinnan Obituary

Harry G. Kinnan
April 25, 1941 - November 8, 2021
Bradenton, Florida - Harry G. Kinnan, our beloved husband, father, educator and coach, went home to God on November 8, 2021. His 80 years of life were defined by a profound love for his family and for the broader Manatee County community. Harry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sue Kinnan; their children; Chris (Amanda), Courtney (Todd), and Patrick (Adrianna); 8 beloved grandchildren; as well as brother, Joe (Linda) Kinnan; and sister, Anne Kinnan. Harry is predeceased by his parents, Captain Joseph Kinnan and Marjorie Kinnan. Harry was born in 1941 in Pittsburgh and graduated from Manatee High in 1958. At Stetson College he was Lambda Chi Alpha and then served in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of Captain. He also earned a Master's from Florida Atlantic. Harry coached at Palmetto High and was the head basketball coach at Manatee Community College for 19 years. After retiring in 1996, Harry ran for the Manatee County School Board, winning election 4 times and serving 16 years. We will miss him dearly. Visitation will be 10AM, Monday, November 15, 2021 followed by Funeral Services at 11AM at Trinity United Methodist Church on Manatee Avenue, with reception immediately following. Jeff and I are so sorry to hear of Mr. Kinnan's passing. Jeff adored him and had many stories of his MCC days being coached by him. They shared a love for basketball and understood each other. Our hearts are heavy and prayers go out to Mrs. Kinnan and the rest of the Kinnan family. God Bless.

My condolences to the family. Harry and I were fraternity brothers at Stetson and I had great respect for him. He was one of kind and that was outstanding.

My Condolences to Sue, Chris, Courtney, Patrick, Joe, and Anne.
I was shocked to learn of Harry's passing. I last talked to him about 3 years ago.
It was 68 years ago when I first met Harry. I was in the 6th grade (1953). He and my late brother, Don, were good friends throughout Junior and Senior high school.
They played on the same MHS baseball team, Harry was a catcher and Don pitched.
Harry invited Don and the late Donald Winters (all class of '58) to go with him and his dad, Captain Joe Kinnan, to see the 1954 ORANGE BOWL.
That's how generous Harry was. My brother was thrilled; never stopped talking about that trip.
In 1956, Harry started a "sandlot" football team. He was gracious enough to let me join the team, even though my skills were lacking.
We played another team coached by his friend, Hank Rennagal, MHS "57. Harry's team defeated Hank's team every time, thanks to Harry's coaching.
He drew up plays, and we even practiced; I remember Harry showing me how to grip the football in order to throw a spiral pass. So, even as a Junior in H.S., Harry was already showing coaching skills that he would display in his later professional coaching career. Harry never yelled at us when we made mistakes, he just encouraged us.
When Harry got his first car, a 1949 BUICK, he asked if I wanted to go to a movie at the SUBURBAN DRIVE-IN with him, Joe, and a couple of neighborhood kids. I still remember the movie, BLACKBOARD JUNGLE; kind of funny because we all became teachers.
In 2010, I started watching the MHS football practices; Harry was always there. He filled me in on the players and the plays being run. It was so much more enjoyable watching the practices with Harry.

He was the consummate , " Gentleman ! "
His memory will forever live in , and on the minds of countless citizens of Manatee County .
Rest in Peace in The Heavens , Mr . Harry Kinnan .

Harry Kinnan was a truly good human being - loved his family above all others, was a coach who believed in his players regardless of the scoreboard, served unbiasedly on the school board, and gave of himself to the community. "Well done my true and faithful servant." Condolences to Sue, Chris, Courtney, Patrick, Anne and Joe. He so loved you all. Sorry I won't be in town to attend his services. I always knew when I talked with Harry that his response was well reasoned and fair whether I agreed with him or not.

Knew Coach Kinnan through the game of basketball. Worked with him at MCC. Enthusiasm was a mainstay with him. Always took the time to say hello and ask how life was going. He left a legacy in Manatee county that reached so many athletes and students. RIP.

I only knew Harry for about 10 years but I am honored to have had the privilege to have known him. I don't think he ever met a stranger. I always laughed when he would strike up conversations spontaneously with total strangers and suddenly they were not strangers anymore. I can remember so many funny situations like that. Harry was a truly good man and was close to Jesus throughout the time that I knew him. Surely he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

I knew Mr Kinnan as Coach. I played basketball for him at Manatee Community College. Coach was not only a great mentor while playing for him, but throughout my entire Professional Career as well.

He was instrumental in assisting me get into Education as a Teacher and Coach at St Stephen’s in Bradenton, FL. He also assisted me get my first Collegiate Coaching position at Manatee Community College. Coach was just a phone call away for guidance during my subsequent tenures at Middle Georgia College and Iowa Western Community College

He had the innate ability to make anyone he met feel comfortable. Early on in a conversation, it was evident he genuinely cared about people, and how he could help if possible. He led by example and servitude as an Army Captain, Coach and School Board Member.

I feel fortunate to have had a relationship with Coach Kinnan that spanned 35 years. He will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

Knowing you the past 25 years was a blessing. You were the best father-in-law and friend anyone could have. I’m fortunate to have become part of the Kinnan family to witness the support, steadiness, and strong sense of family you provided. I’ll be forever grateful to you and Sue for sending Courtney to Auburn where I met her.

I’ll miss getting your perspective on sports, politics, and current events. I’ll remember your positive outlook no matter the situation. I’ll remember your desire to build people up and how you frequently complimented and brightened the day of someone you didn’t even know. I’ll remember your ability to make conversation with anyone and your willingness to give advice. I’ll remember your charm, wit, and approach of not taking everything so seriously.

I’ll miss our quests to find places to sit down, watch sports, and occasionally drink a beer while Courtney and Sue relentlessly shopped. I’ll remember intensely cheering with you while listening online to several of Joe’s Manatee High football playoff games back when internet connections were bad and we had to concentrate to make out what was going on. I’ll always be in awe of the frequency and amount of apple pie and ice cream you ate. I’ll remember your incredible Christmas spirit and how the music, decorations and lights made you feel so vibrant with Christmas buzz. I’ll remember how proud you were of Courtney and your desire to emphasize her job title, whatever it was at the time. I’ll remember your love for your grandchildren and how you instilled confidence in each of them at every opportunity. I’ll remember you and Sue simply being there for the biggest and best moments in my life with Courtney.

Basically, I’ll remember and miss everything about you. You are one of the greatest people I’ve known and I hope to be more like you in the ways that I’m able. I’ll see you again in Heaven.

Harry Kinnan was elected the year I began teaching in Manatee County. As a teacher, I very much appreciated Harry's tenure on the School Board because he was very much the "steady hand", respectful of teachers and the burdens placed upon them, and his insight was invaluable. Manatee County was indeed fortunate to have Harry Kinnan, and I count myself fortunate to have worked under his tenure, knowing that the schools had such a man as he making decisions. He will be sorely missed. Fly high, Mr. Kinnan, and thank you. Sarah Hammock
