Fred Marshall Obituary

DOWNINGTOWN - Frederick LaMoigne Marshall, 95, of Downingtown, formerly of Collegeville/Trappe, retired teacher and school administrator, died Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2012).
Born Feb. 6, 1917, Mr. Marshall grew up in Clarion and graduated from Clarion High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Clarion State Teachers' College and a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Marshall's early career was spent in Bradford, where he taught mathematics and served as assistant principal at the Bradford Junior High School. In addition to church and community activities, during his years in Bradford, he was a leader of the First Methodist Church Boy Scout troop and camp director of the Elk Lick Council Boy Scout Camp for many summers.
In 1962 he became the principal of Collegeville/Trappe High School and later joined the mathematics department of Pottsgrove High School in Pottstown. After a brief six-month retirement he returned to the classroom to teach mathematics at the Hill School in Pottstown for 14 years before finally retiring from teaching in 1993.
During retirement, he indulged his lifelong interest in travel, visiting Europe, Scotland, England, the Caribbean, and ultimately, Alaska, where he discovered a deep love for the Alaskan wilderness. For the next nearly 20 years he summered in one or another of several Alaskan wilderness lodges, sleeping in a tent, working in the lodge, mentoring young staff members, and in the process gathering a "family" of close friends whom he held dear until his death.
Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife, Pat Gillespie. Surviving children from his previous marriage to June Rhea Marshall include daughters Sarah Larimer (John) of Tempe, Ariz., and Deborah Mueller (James) of Pottstown; three grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Marshall; granddaughter, Candace Quaid Marshall; and great-granddaughter, Maddalena Carbone.
The family will host a memorial celebration of his life on Oct. 28. Friends and family may RSVP to his daughters at [email protected] by Oct. 17.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sierra Club or to the Chester County SPCA, organizations that were very important to Mr. Marshall.

Peggy and Mike Pentz

We are so sorry to receive the sad news of Fred's passing. We truly have lost a good and unique friend. We always looked foreward to driving him to Hill School functions because of the entertaining and humorus stories he lavished on us during the drives. He was an exceptional mathematics teacher and I was proud to be a colleague of his in that department. He was a master at humorous ribbing. we will really miss him.

Oh my goodness - I had lost track of Fred after he left Bradford Pa - what an amazing life he led. He was a very good teacher and principal while in Bradford - truly he has left his light among many.

Dynamic Fred was probably planning another trip to Alaska when sadly his itinerary was changed… We admired and loved Fred, a kind, warm friend and colleague. Our hearts join Fred's relatives and the Hill School family in celebrating his amazing life.

Fred has left us?
Impossible!
Fred had the enthusiasm of a teen-ager, with the maturity of an adult. He was physical. He was joyous.
Many years ago a Hill School alumnus was in Alaska. There was a sign directing drivers to an encampment. He turned off the main highway. Sixty-five miles of dirt road later he arrived in a most isolated 'resort.' Before dinner he saw a sign 'Fred's Place' and headed for the bar for a drink. The place was loaded with Hill School publications and a banner. Fred was most pleased that he had been located, and appreciated. This was only about fifteen years ago.
May we all do as well as Fred.
