John Compton Obituary

MOUNT JEWETT - John Victor Compton, 73, of 194 Dewey Ave., Hazel Hurst, passed away Sunday (June 2, 2013) at his residence.
Born Jan. 6, 1940, in Kane, he was a son of the late Victor and Viola Porter Compton. On May 1, 1960, in Eldred, he married Carol L. Slaugenhaupt, who survives.
Mr. Compton had worked at various positions, including the charcoal factory in Marvindale, working in the woods, in the oil fields, as a construction worker where he helped build the Kinzua Dam, and finally at Kane Hardwood, from which he retired in 2006.
John was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hazel Hurst. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, digging for leeks and picking ground pine.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Carol Compton, are a daughter, Janice (Steve) Howard of Port Allegany; three sons, John Compton of Hazel Hurst, Thomas (Sharon) Compton of Arizona and Kevin (Bonnie) Compton of Kane; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte (Emil) Strich of Ridgway; three brothers, Roy (Mary Lou) Compton of Kane, Donald (Cindy) Compton of Hazel Hurst and James (Debbie) Compton of Lewis Run; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents, were a son, Donald J. Compton; a granddaughter, Joe-Ann Compton; and a brother, Frank Compton.
Friends and family may attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home Inc. in Mount Jewett with Chad Troup, pastor of the First Church of God in Kane, officiating. Burial will be at Bridgeview Cemetery attended by immediate family only.
