LANCASTER - Nancy J. Herzog, 86, formerly of Williamsport, died Thursday (Feb. 16, 2012) at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster.
Born in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Vern and Kathryn Shaw Walbridge. Nancy was married to Leo L. Herzog Jr., resident of the Mennonite Home, for 64 years last April 12.
As the daughter of a U.S. Army colonel serving in coastal defenses, Nancy lived around the world in her youth. Her father was stationed at Fort Kamayamaya, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941. Nancy helped to care for the wounded following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. A graduate of Eastern High School in Washington, D.C., she attended Lock Haven State Teachers College.
Nancy worked as a paraprofessional reading aide for Loyalsock Township School District for seven years. She loved gardening, was very artistic, was an avid reader and was a member of Williamsport Woman's Club. An active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Williamsport, she served as a Eucharistic minister, and on the ladies guild and bereavement and liturgy committees. In Lancaster, she was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.
Surviving, in addition to her loving husband, are three daughters, Mary Kathryn (Joseph M.) Lapic of Beaver Falls, Susan Ann Wion of Alexandria and Cynthia Jill (Dennis H.) Townsend of Landisville; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Amy) Burkes and Steven (Jeanine) Burkes, all of Pittsburgh, Rachel Wion and Sarah (Keith) Beamer, all of Alexandria, Jill (David) Moniz of Conshohocken, Mark Townsend of Landisville, Matthew Adams of Lancaster, and Alex Townsend of Alexandria, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Sydney, Layne and Madilyn Burkes; and her brother, James (Maria) Walbridge of Williamsport.
Nancy was preceded in death by her sons-in-law, William Burkes and Robert Wion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at noon Feb. 28, with visitation taking place for a half hour prior to the service, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601. The Rev. Peter I. Hahn will be the celebrant. Burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
