Alan Smart Obituary

Alan F. Smart

1948-2012 Alan F. Smart, 64, of Hinsdale, N.H. passed away on November 28, 2012.

Born in Keene, N.H., April 25, 1948, he graduated from Hinsdale High School in 1966. An artist, Alan considered attending Rhode Island School of Design after high school but life intervened. Upon receiving a draft notice in the late nineteen-sixties, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving overseas in Okinawa.

After his discharge in the early nineteen-seventies, he expressed his artistic abilities in woodworking, designing and building furniture and decorative accessories. He worked in the carpentry field and at one time had his own carpentry business. He was employed by Brattleboro Memorial Hospital working in the maintenance department. For the past seventeen years, Alan has done maintenance for the Hinsdale School District.

Alan was an avid motorcyclist. He enjoyed riding and also restored and rebuilt motorcycles, including customized painting, once again demonstrating his artistry. Not only did Alan enjoy the outdoors on his motorcycle, he was also a hunter and had numerous deer and turkey trophies.

Formerly married to Sally Bruce and later to Antoinette Staskunas, Alan is survived by his mother Yvonne Smart; his sister Shari Russell; his brother Gary and his wife Lavonne; and his sister Teri Tu and her husband Aung. He is also survived by his children, his son Jon and his wife Heather; his son Cordell; his daughter Angela Estes and her husband Kirk; his daughter Emily Weaver and her husband Chris; and his daughter Mikayla Haskell and by ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alan was pre-deceased by his grandparents Andrew and Louise Jackson and Frederick and Lillian Smart; by his father Francis L. Smart; and by his sister Susan Smart.

Memorial service arrangements are pending.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Alan's name may be sent to the Vermont Nurse Association and Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire, 1 Hospital Court, Suite 8, Bellows Falls, VT 05101 or to the American Red Cross, 83 Court St., Keene, N.H. 03431.
