Christopher Bumstead Obituary

Christopher Clark Bumstead, 59, collapsed suddenly and died at home in Brattleboro on October 30th, four days before he was scheduled for surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock. He had been ill for several months.Chris was born in Hartford, Connecticut on July 18, 1957. He attended public schools in Connecticut, New York City, and Vermont; his family moved to Brattleboro in 1970. He graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1975 and went on to the University of Vermont for a political science degree. Chris was an exchange student his sophomore year and studied in France at a college prep lycee in Strasbourg. Chris continued playing tennis his last two years of high school; he was ranked 7th in the state for men's singles; he lost in the state finals.Chris enjoyed vacations on Martha's Vineyard from age six. He worked there for a full year during college. He was drawn to surf casting for Striped Bass and Bluefish. Once, he lost the yearly Chappaquiddick competition to a woman; his 57 lb. fish was a couple ounces short.Chris considered teaching high school history or going for a law degree. But he was drawn to remodeling and new housing and worked in Brattleboro area for more than 25 years. He was gregarious, talkative, an insatiable reader; he loved politics and literature. He also enjoyed deep discussions and debate on almost any literary or political topic. During his life, he made many friends who describe him as "a great guy, best friend to all."Chris's father Donald F. Clark died when he was only three. He leaves his mother, Joan Bumstead Allen of Middlebury, his brother Kevin, his step-father Edward L. Allen, three step-sisters, Pamela Allen of Pheonix, AZ, Melody Allen of Brainbridge Island, WA, and Heather Edenhofer of Flagstaff, AZ. He also leaves two nieces and three aunts, Dorothy Clark, Margery Clark, and Anne Rome, and many cousins in Connecticut; and a special cousin, Holly Nicolle in Huntington, VT. I knew Christopher as a young boy. Even then, he exhibited the characteristics that people here have remarked about. I remember him as a fine leftie tennis player, an excellent skier, and not a bad basketball player. And, more importantly, a good boy to have around. I'm sorry I did not know him as he grew into maturity, but pleased that he had so many good friends.

Kris and I were so sorry to hear about Chris. We worked together as carpenters years back and always seemed to meet on the road somewhere. We would talk till the traffic behind us would start to honk. Really wish we could talk again. We are planning on going to a Dolphins game in Miami this year and will be sure to wear a Dolphins hat in Chris' memory. Chris knows that would never happen but I had to say it anyway. Bye buddy.

We were so very sorry to learn that Chris passed away. He could light a room with his smile and presence. He made the world a better place for merely being in it. Wishing you a gentle journey, Bummer, Godspeed.

I have worked at the library for 25 years and know Chris as an avid reader, a super friendly guy, a hard worker and a caring son. He never minded paying his overdue fines. It was nice when he moved into town and got a free card. I will miss his infectious smile.

I was lucky enough to see Chris around town, it was as though no time had passed. Always eager to catch up - he was interesting and interested. Chris was wicked smart - said with my best "Vermahnt" accent! RIP Chris.

Can't believe it's true! What a great guy, I loved his laugh and how he was one of the few that comfortably called me "Jo". He was a expert carpenter, built my daughters bedroom 24 yrs ago! Now it's Miles room...never saw enough of u Chris, that will be our regret now that it's too late. So very sorry to his family. I'll think of u Chris whenever I play Trivial Pursuit, everyone wanted u on their team! RIP. love joanne and the Shaws.

This was a shock to read this morning. Chris and I were good friends in high school and I liked him so much. What a good guy. I specifically remember a trip our whole class took to Martha's Vineyard with our bikes and camping! To the whole Bumstead family I am so sorry for your loss.

Very sad to arrive home and hear of the passing of a very good friend. I've enjoyed our many discussions ranging from Goethe to golf. A very intelligent, wide read man taken too early in life. My condolences go to his family and many friends who will miss him.
