Frederick L. Coburn

1931-2015 Frederick Leslie Coburn died Sunday, June 7 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. He was born Nov. 8, 1931 in Waltham, Mass. to Donald A. Coburn and Blanche C. (Akerly) Coburn. Fred was the youngest of five children. He attended schools in Newton. Although Fred wasn't born in Vermont, he was a true Vermonter through and through. He lived on the Augur Hole Rd. in Marlboro, Vt. for over 50 years. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, snowmobiling and riding his four-wheeler on his land. It was the same land Fred had spent his summers with his family He got much satisfaction precisely cutting, splitting, and stacking his firewood. He also loved and cared for many dogs, Fluffer, Coors, Holly, Harley and Dolly. Fred was a worker. He took much pride and care in whatever the task. He worked as a cook, truck driver, equipment operator, and retired from Haystack Ski Area working nearly 20 years at a job he loved, caring for the grass on the golf course. He arguably had the best kept lawn on the Augur Hole. Fred was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He had a great disdain for any team from New York, and especially any team coached by Rex Ryan. Just ask James Anderson, a New York fan and produce manager at Shaw's in Wilmington, Vt., who Fred would enjoy bantering with at any New York loss or Red Sox or Patriots win. When traveling through West Brattleboro heading to Marlboro, Fred would always remember good friends and good memories, and would love to tell the stories behind them; how Teddy Ziter, owner of Ziter's Market, would sell you the thickest, freshest, hand-cut steak. How he was proud to have worked with current Chelsea Royal owner, Todd Darrah, in the kitchens of West Dover back in the day, and the fun they had, and how once in awhile a food fight just might happen. Or the good times he had trading and visiting with Mark and Kelly, Peter, and Tom Jamieson at Rentals Plus, which left everybody laughing and shaking their heads. And if the conversation ever turned to mechanics, Fred knew he had the best in Randy Boyd on Higley Hill in Wilmington. "Dooly" Boyd always took care of Fred and Fred really appreciated that service. Fred thought the world of "Dooly" Boyd. Fred's body will be cremated with half of his ashes going to Medfield, Mass. to be laid to rest next to his father, while the other half will be scattered in the Auger Hole Rd. Brook from a bridge Fred built in his back yard. He is survived by his dear sister, Nancy Mailing of Foxboro, Mass.; his nephew, Ricky Doig and his wife, Janelle Doig of Maine; and his good friends, Mikey Branciforte of Connecticut and John Galanes of Marlboro.
