Joan D. Madden
1927-2010 Joan Dings Madden died peacefully at her Concord, N.H. residence on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.
Born to Justus and Gertrude Dings in Defreestville, N.Y. on June 20, 1927, along with her four siblings; Melba, Henry, Robert and Edith, she enjoyed a happy childhood growing up on a country farm. She graduated from Columbia High School in East Greenbush, N.Y. in 1944 and from Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. in 1949.
On Sept. 3, 1949, Joan married John F. Madden of Gloversville, N.Y. Their son, Jay, was born in 1956, followed by their daughter, Jilinda, in 1960.
Joan enjoyed a successful dual career as a nurse and a minister's wife. Her nursing career encompassed a broad range of experiences working in hospitals, schools, nursing homes and Visiting Nurse Associations in Albany, N.Y., Hyannis, Mass., Brattleboro, and Concord, N.H. She also taught nursing at both the high school and college levels. In her demanding role as a minister's wife, she was always there to support the work of the church community.
As a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Joan was always more concerned for the welfare of others than for her own. She was never heard complaining about her own condition. She was happiest when she was visiting with friends and family, especially her two grandsons, Daniel and Paul O'Sullivan. Joan always loved shopping for her next fashionable outfit, snapping family photos, and baking her favorite desserts.
Joan will be dearly missed by her friends and family. She touched the lives of many in a unique way and for that we are thankful. "Joanie" was truly grateful for the generous help and support she received from neighbors and staff at Havenwood - Heritage Heights.
