Dr. Joseph Ivan Mandell

Dr. Joseph Ivan Mandell, age 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at his home in Williamsville, Vermont, with his family by his side. Joseph was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, raised in New York City and moved to Vermont with his wife Phyllis, in 1958 where they owned and ran a small ski lodge in South Newfane, Vermont.

Joseph was an elementary school teacher and principal in Dover, Vermont in the 1960s and later, teacher and principal at Putney Central School. Joseph served as Dean of Students at the former Windham College in the 1970s. He later served as Dean of Students in the Connecticut State college system until his retirement in 1997. Joseph was active in civic and community affairs throughout his life, and served as selectperson in Newfane, Vermont in his retirement.

Joseph received his B.A. from Windham College, Masters Degree from New York University and Doctorate Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts.

Joseph was a talented, artist, musician and carpenter.

Joseph was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle - survived by his wife Phyllis, children - Jonathan and his wife Karen, Susan and her fiance Phil, Elisabeth and her husband Tim and Daniel and his wife Dolly, grandchildren - Sarah, Ethan and Isaac, Sister Joan and nephews - Robert, Sandy and David. He was a mentor to many - and loved by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held in late Spring. In Lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to the NewBrook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
