Malcolm Guild Obituary

Malcolm W. Guild

1935 - 2014 CAMBRIDGEPORT Malcolm Warner Guild, age 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at Springfield Hospital with his family at his side. Born in Rutland, Vt., on Jan. 5, 1935, to Arthur and Belle (Randall) Guild, Malcolm was a boyhood friend and college roommate of Jim Jeffords, who also died this week. Mac attended Yale University on a ROTC scholarship and served as a Navy pilot. On Feb. 16, 1963, he married Mary MacDonald, who predeceased him in 2010. Mac and Mary moved to Cambridgeport in 1965 and raised their family on a small farm on Atcherson Hollow Road. He worked at IBM in the early years of computers, and then worked for most of his career as manager of data processing at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. Malcolm was a member of the Walpole Unitarian Church, the Hitormis Rod & Gun Club, and the Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association, and he was very proud of his conservation of 100 acres of land along Atcherson Hollow Road through the Vermont Land Trust. He loved to hike, and he walked the Long Trail in sections over the years. He spent hours walking the trails through the woods near his home, and he was known for his daily 2 a.m. walks and his love of chocolate. Mac is survived by his six children: Matthew Guild (Carol) of Bellows Falls; Jeanne Eastman (Steve) of North Chatham, N.H.; Katherine Kane of Cambridgeport; Linda Milligan (Dave) of Ashland, Maine; Susan Miller (Steve) of Milhousen, Ind.; and Thaddeus Guild (Jan) of Cambridgeport. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Craig and Drew Guild, Seth and Silas Eastman, William and Daniel Kane, Henry and Malcolm Milligan, and Anna, Grace, and Gwendalyn Guild. Also surviving is his close friend and companion Karen Walter, with whom he enjoyed traveling and spending time over the past few years. Besides his parents and wife, Malcolm was also predeceased by his brother, Jim Guild. The family expresses its appreciation to Golden Cross Ambulance and the staff at the Springfield Hospital for their kind and considerate care during Malcolm's final hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Malcolms' memory to the Walpole Unitarian Church, the Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association, or the Vermont Land Trust. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Malcolm was a true scholar athlete leader of the RHS Class of 1952. It seems fitting he should join his oldest friend, Jim Jefords, on this next journey.

I did not work with "Mac" at Fellows, but met him after I joined the Hitormis Club in Springfield in 1989. He was a fine gentleman, with a calm, quiet demeanor. I will greatly miss seeing him at our montly gatherings.
