Melvin Shakun Obituary
He earned degrees from City College of New York and Columbia University, where he completed his Ph.D. in Operations Research. Mel met his beloved wife, Norma, over cookies at Columbia - the start of a sweet, 68-year marriage together. A longtime faculty member at New York University's Stern School of Business, he later became Professor Emeritus. He founded the international journal Group Decision and Negotiation, launched a related annual international conference and authored Evolutionary Systems Design (1988). These contributions advanced new approaches to decision-making and negotiations grounded in connectedness.
Mel will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and sense of wonder. He was a bridge between generations, cultures, and ideas. A man who sparked inspiration and nudged minds towards new horizons.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma; his sister Elaine; his children, Laura and David; and his grandchildren, Talea and Rafael.
