Phillip Brown Obituary

Phillip L. Brown of Somersworth, New Hampshire, formerly of Brattleboro, died suddenly on February 2, 2025. He was born July 10, 1944, in Brattleboro, son of Ronald P. Brown of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, and Barbara J. March of Brattleboro.

He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1962. He studied engineering at the University of Maine before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966. He was commissioned as an officer in 1967 and served Active Duty until 1975. He was stationed in southern Germany where he met his future wife, Martha Kursch of Hamburg and married her on October 11, 1969. She predeceased him on September 12, 2020. He served in the 984th Engineer Company (Land Clearing) in Vietnam, including as Company Commander from March 1969 to September 1969, then as Battalion Maintenance Officer until March 1970. He retired as a Colonel in 1996, having served US Army Reserve units throughout New England as an Engineer Officer. He completed master's degree in Civil Engineering at the University of New Hampshire while working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Phil loved the out-of-doors, the Vermont woods and its wildlife, downhill skiing and the Harris Hill Ski Jump. He was a voracious reader, volunteered with the Vietnam Veterans' group, and with the high school reunion roster.

He leaves behind daughter Barbara Cox of Gloucester, MA, son Christopher Brown of Berwick, ME, sister Bonnie Brown of Halifax, VT, good friend Gene Riley of Brattleboro and several cousins. There will be no services at this time. An interment of ashes at Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery in Brattleboro will be announced at a later date. Donations to the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center, West Brattleboro.

I worked with Phil for many years. After he retired, we began having dinner at various restaurants and we would email almost daily. After I retired, we began going on day trips: visiting wild life sanctuaries, walking local hiking trails, and climbing Mt Major. We shared a love for reading and would often share authors we enjoyed. He would help me with projects in my yard, as well as give advice on many different subjects. He was a great friend and I will miss him dearly.

Phil was a very special friend of mine. We met when he discovered my used bookstore in Brattleboro. Often, when he was in town he would take me to dinner. I was most appreciative. He was the only person I would go to when I wanted to buy a car, tires etc. I am heartbroken. He was so kind to me.
