William Luring Obituary

William S. Luring 1933 2011 SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. William Siemer Luring, 77, died at home September 23 of pancreatic cancer. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 26, 1933, the only child of Gustave Lee and Priscilla Harris Luring, and graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He worked for Esso in New Jersey and Stanford University and FMC in California before the experience of leading a group of students to Sweden led him to leave the corporate world and join the staff of The Experiment in International Living (now World Learning) in Putney, where he directed the leadership and summer abroad programs. There, he met his future wife Louise, and they were married October 10, 1970 in Weston. In 1979, he and his family moved to Saxtons River, where he became business manager and treasurer of Vermont Academy, serving until his retirement in 1994. The annual William S. Luring Award honors outstanding service to the Academy by a member of the support staff. A committed member of the Bellows Falls Rotary Club for 27 years, he was a Paul Harris Fellow and instituted the club's local foundation in recognition of Harris's time as a student at Vermont Academy before going on to found Rotary International. He revived and was editor of the club's newsletter. He also served on many boards and committees, including Main Street Arts, Our Place Drop-in Center, the Swift Water Girl Scout Council, and the Saxtons River Fourth of July committee. He took great pleasure in volunteering to work with young students at New England Kurn Hattin Homes. His community service was recognized by Yankee magazine in 2004 with their Barn-Raising award. He was an avid motorcyclist, sharing many hours on his BMW traveling with his biking buddies, especially through the Atlantic provinces of Canada. He was also a passionate foodie whose tastes ranged from Cincinnati four-way chili and White Castle hamburgers to meals at some of the finest restaurants in New York. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Elena and her children Sophia and Jack of Saxtons River, and Marianna and her husband Garo Taft and their son Aram of Brooklyn, N.Y. There will be no services, but the family will host a celebration of his life at a later date. Contributions in his name may be made to N.E. Kurn Hattin (P.O. Box 127, Westminster, VT 05158) or the Bellows Falls Rotary Club Foundation, Inc. (P.O. Box 81, Bellows Falls, VT 05101).

Billy and I would spend days and weeks together travelIling by
Motorcycle from Newfoundland to the Southern US, spending 24/7 together ,never slowed by weather or distance. He loved sweetbreads and dining at all levels. We would ride 300 miles to each other’s house then leave for a ride to another time zone!!
We met at the Culinary Institute in Hyde park and we’d spend winters planning our journeys... one time we returned back to Saxtons after a week on the road and Louise asked why we came back so soon!!!
The best companion anyone could hope for. I miss him

Dear Louise, I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was a great person who always seemed to live life to the fullest. I had the privilege of meeting him through motorcycling, and the honor of knowing that I became friends with a very special person who also enjoyed eating fine foods and riding BMW motorycles. He will always hold a dear place in my heart.

"Service is the rent we pay for our time on earth" and Bill paid his rent ten-fold. He did so much for so many and was a stalwart of our community. May he be remembered for his generosity and good works. Louise and family, thank you for sharing this wonderful man with us. Peace be with all of you.

Ten years ago I met Bill at a Motorcycle Rally, and lunched with him at the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park. We spent countless days and thousands of miles together from Newfoundland and south. He made me welcome to his family and he and Louise to ours. Billy, you are with me on every ride, and there will be a wine glass for you at every dinner.
Rest my friend, love ya.

Dear Louise, How sorry I am to hear of Bill's death. I got to know him, and to respect him greatly while working with him on both the Rockingham/Westminster Senior Living project and also the Warming Shelter. What a special man he was! Dear Louise and "girls,"

Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. How ironic that I just returned from a Rotary meeting to find an email from Bob telling me about Bill's passing. What a loss to all of you and to so many more. Bill was a person who touched so many lives in ways that I suspect he never even realized. Everyday, I look at a picture in my office of our merry band of VA-ers on the Great Wall of China in 1986--when Bill and I were roommates(I forget why Louise wasn't his roommate)--on that amazing trip. I still tell the story of our St. Patrick's day together in Beijing. Boy, did we laugh. Bill was man of intellect, class, humor, integrity and loyalty. He was a truly wonderful human being. He and all of you will be in my thoughts and prayers. The world has lost a great guy and a true example of a gentleman.

My heart goes out to Louise and the girls. Bill, I cherished you as colleague and friend at The Experiment in International Living during the five years I followed you in selecting and training group leaders, and I always loved it when our paths crossed in the wider community in the years that followed. You will be dearly missed and warmly remembered.

Many years ago, Rotary International, sent Bill's name to me as the "go to guy" for motorcycling in New England. His efforts led to an active riding group from all of the N. E. states. His motorcycling history has made believers of us all. Rest easy and ride well, Bill.
