Martin Small Obituary

Moredech Leib Schmulevicz, also known as Martin Small, of Broomfield, died Nov. 29.

He was born in 1916 in Maitchet, Poland, to Schlomo and Esther. Until he came to America, he was known mostly as Mottel, and inhabited a joyful Jewish world in his childhood.

Most of his family was killed in the Holocaust, and he was a survivor of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where other inmates called him "the rabbi," because of his chanting of ancient prayers. He was rescued from the camp on May 5, 1945, by the U.S. Army 65th Infantry Division.

He married wife Doris in July 1951, and they celebrated their 57th anniversary this year.

He was gifted in languages and spoke English, Polish, Yiddish, German, Italian, Hebrew and Spanish.

He managed real estate, and did everything around the house -- painting, fixing and figuring things out. After he retired, he found a talent for art, his family said.

"Remember us" became the meaning of his life, and he and Doris spoke out about the Holocaust at university campuses and synogogues, his family said. In 2007, he and Doris received the Civis Princeps award at Regis University.

He lived most of his life in America in New York, but moved to Broomfield five years ago to be closer to his daughter Miriam and her family.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stuart, in 1968.

Survivors include his wife, Doris, of Broomfield, daughter, Miriam, of Broomfield, and her husband, Bill; grandchildren, Jacob and Jennifer, and their partners, Jennifer and John; and great-grandchildren, Julian, Jaden Elka, Ezra, Vance David, Graysen and Samantha.

A funeral was Sunday.

I wish I'd heard Mr. Small speak. I read his book. I think the most important thing he accomplished with it was to present a beautiful portrait of a way of life lost forever.
