John Joseph Twomey

1933 - 2022

ohn Joseph Twomey, 88, of Shallotte, died Feb. 11, 2022, after a sudden but brief battle with cancer. Born in Worcester, N.Y., on Nov. 5, 1933, he was a son of the late Thomas Twomey and Hannah Crowley Twomey. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Alfred "Al" Twomey. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from the New York State Department of Corrections as a superintendent after 30 years of service. Retirement didn't slow him down. He continued community service as alderman, Mayor pro-tem and member of the planning board for the town of Shallotte. He was also president of the Friends of the Library organization, an umpire for little league baseball and referee for youth basketball. Sports were an important part of his life. John won the Golden Gloves in boxing, and excelled in many sports including softball, golf, and tennis, but his greatest passion was basketball. He played competitive basketball at the state and national Senior Games from age 62 to 86.
John was married for 61 years to the love of his life, Janet Yale Twomey. Together they raised four children; son, John Andrew Twomey (Susan), West Winfield, N.Y.; daughters, Linda Cunningham (Jeff), North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Laurie Eddy (Jonathan), Burlington, Vt., and Jill Fallone, Shallotte. In addition to his wife and children, John is survived by his brothers, Thomas Twomey (Sallie), Charlottesville, Va. and Daniel Twomey (Rose), Madison, N.J.; sister, Hannah Emhof, Delray Beach, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Wesley Howell (Danielle), Lindsey Glass (Zach), Maureen and Kelly Eddy, and Anthony Fallone. A Celebration of Life will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Brunswick Funeral Service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
