Karen L. Heffelfinger, 74, of Reading, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, at her home. She was born Feb. 25, 1950, in Bronson to Fred and Maybelle (Washburn) Hostetler. She married Richard "Dick" Heffelfinger on June 23, 1968, and he survives.
Karen graduated from Lakeland High School in Lagrange, IN. She was a longtime member of the Williams Center United Methodist Church in Bryan where she served as Treasurer of the Ladies Aid. She also volunteered her time to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as well as several little league teams. In 1983, she and her husband, Dick moved to Reading where they purchased their farm. She was a member of Reading United Methodist Church and also served as Treasurer for many years. Since her time in Reading, she has been extremely active in the church, serving on almost every committee, participating in the praise team, church choir, and cooking for church events.
Beyond her involvement at the church, Karen loved working on the farm. She could be found driving a tractor, transporting grain to the mill, mowing the yard or doing bookkeeping in the office. She enjoyed canning, gardening, cooking, and most of all, spending time with her family.
Surviving besides her husband, Dick is two children, Matthew (Cynthia) Heffelfinger of Angola and Amy (Gregory) Cavey of Quincy; grandchildren, Colton Heffelfinger, Kirsten Ferrigan and Noel and Eleanor Cavey; great-grandchildren, Adeline Robertson and Alani Cavey; and brother, Dennis Hostetler of Angola.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Kathleen Rumsey, Wanda Stalder and Dewight Hostetler.
A memorial service for Karen Heffelfinger will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Reading United Methodist Church with the Pastor Deb Cole and the Paster Penny Nunn officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from Noon until the time of service at the church. Private family burial will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County or Reading United Methodist Church Building Fund.
