Carlton BAKER Obituary

Baker - Carlton H.
April 23, 1932-Sept 6, 2023
Carl passed peacefully, thanks to Hospice, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was surrounded by the love of his children as well as other family members. With Carl's passing, we lost a real treasure of a person. He was a gregarious man who lived a full and active life. He made everyone who met him feel special. He was a walking Wikipedia of knowledge and information on everything from flying to finance. Preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Dorothy Carr Baker, who taught him the value of hard work, the dignity of others, the blessings of life, community service, and the importance of family. He was also preceded in death by his brothers David and Doug, and sister Stella from whom he learned the art of self-preservation, and negotiating. He also learned that faith and sense of humor will take you a long way. Also preceding him in death his wives, Shirley Winegar Baker and Betty Rahill Baker. Surviving him are his brother Kirk, his four children, Ron Winegar (Mary), Tom Winegar (Lyn), Bonnie Baker and son David Baker, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren as well as the Rahill clan.
Carl loved golf, playing cards, watching hockey, spaghetti, a good joke, singing, bourbon Manhattans, and dirty martinis. Although not necessarily in that order. In lieu of a memorial service, Carl wants everyone who reads this to raise a glass in his memory, hug the person near you and call or reach out to someone you haven't seen in a long time. Memorial contributions may be made to Elma Methodist Church or the Jamison Road Volunteer Fire Department. There will be a private internment in Elma sometime in the future. Rest in peace Carl.

In honor of this wonderful man, I will raise my glass tonight and smile. It would have been so wonderful to have a Dad like this. I grew up without one. How blessed you all were to have him as your leader.

I first met Carl in the late 1970's when I was the Southtowns Correspondent for the Buffalo Evening News and was assigned to cover the Elma Town Board meetings. Though the Board was made up of Republicans, there were sometimes disagreements on how issues facing the Town or on what residents wanted the Board to do. He would listen while everyone made their case before he spoke. He had this ability to offer compromises in a very calm manner. He was seen as the voice of reason. His sense of humor was wonderful. He was a good friend of my late cousin, Dode Keller. My sincere condolences to Carl's family. Judy Keller Morganti

Kirk....I was sorry to read this morning of your brother´s death ....reading his obituary brought back so many memories of growing up in Elma, and the people who helped make it such a great town. It seemed everyone knew everyone back then...the Baker family in particular and all it´s members was,I believe, known by all...reading the names this morning really took me back in time. You and your family will be in my thoughts....

Carl lived in our neighberhood on Olean Road in Holand and as young children in the neighborhood we played together a lot. We all were sad when he moved to Elma.
