Douglas Michalak Obituary
June 30, 1952 - May 26, 2025
Born in Buffalo, NY, Doug graduated from Amherst Central High School in 1970. He received his Bachelor's & Master's Degrees in Art Education at Buffalo State College. In between, he completed his certification to teach K-12 Art through the University of Oregon. An art educator his entire professional life, Doug taught at Alexander Central School District; North Allegheny School District (Pittsburgh, PA) & the Lyndonville Central School District. Doug was also the yearbook advisor at Lyndonville for 20 years. An active member of the NYS Art Teachers Association, he was awarded Region 2 "Art Educator of the Year" (2019). Upon retirement, he mentored student art teachers at Nazareth University. Doug was a courageous role model and cheerleader in the Rochester CLL Society support group, helping others dealing with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). Doug is survived by his loving wife, Jolene Bak; daughter Taryn Michalak; daughter Kendra Michalak (Robert Lockhart) & grandson Levi Mitchell; brother Andrew (Yvonne Daum) & family: sister Madeline (Loren Ratajczak) & family; brother Robert (Sarah Forbes) & family; sister Gwen. He was predeceased by his father Raymond Michalak & mother Margaret (Drover) Michalak. Donations to the CLL Society or UR Medicine Wilmot Cancer Institute are suggested as ways to commemorate Doug's life. For service details, please visit www.bartolomeo.com.

So sad to hear of Dougie's passing. I have wonderful memories of him playing volleyball, canoeing and backpacking with the Collins-McClive families.

Doug greeted everyone with a smile and was a friend to everyone. My condolences to his family, I´m sure he will be dearly missed.

Doug was such a caring person, he always wore a smile and offered a kind word to all. He was a friend, a colleague, and dedicated teacher that touched the lives of his students and the staff of LCS. Please accept our condolences for your loss and the prayers to get you through these difficult times. RIP Doug, you will be missed.

What a beautiful tribute to Doug. This describes him so well. To know Doug was to love Doug. I´m grateful that I was able to see and chat with him earlier this year. I first met him when I was a teenager, and it was clear to me right away that he was born on a sunny day. And he was obviously immensely talented.
To Jolene, Kendra, Taryn, Andy, Margie, Rob, Gwen, and the rest of Doug´s immediate family - I am so sorry for your loss.
I will miss him deeply.
