I am so sorry to have just learned of the passing of my Uncle Eddie. It was great getting to know him so well while I was in College at Canisius. If I ever needed anything, he was right there. I'm glad I got to see him on my trips back to Buffalo and at my Grandmother Betty's funeral last year. He always told me how much he loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. I know he's swinging a golf club in heaven. God bless Uncle Ed, I will miss you.

Dear Barbara and Family,

I am so sorry to learn of Ed's passing. He was a gentleman that will long be remembered by myself and many other colleagues in the New York State Election Commissioners' Association. Twenty-five years ago when I first became Commissioner, Ed took me (as he did many others) under his wing and became a "mentor". Though retired for nearly 15 years, his name still stands out within our Association. I am greatful to have known and worked with Ed and will long cherish the friendship we shared.

My sincere condolences,
Robin M. St. Andrews
Commissioner of Elections
St. Lawrence County

Dear Barbara, Eileen & Family,

So sorry to read of the Commissioner's passing. He was a very well respected man in the Suto household. He always had a smile, a joke and wisdom for the asking. No matter what age you were, he treated everyone the same, what a great guy! He has made a difference in the community of South Buffalo and beyond, and will be missed, but never forgotten.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I very fondly remember Ed as a Buffalo "cop" who worked the Timon dances during my 4 years there from '55 to '59.
What a nice guy he was then and he never changed.
Always a friendly "Hi" whenever we met at DiTondo's.
Ed's Purgatory was the Timon dances.
He's going straight up.
If more people were like Ed Mahoney, the world would be a much better place.
Fondly remembered.
Deepest sympathies to family and friends,
John M. Shaughnessy

As Director of Recreation in the 1960's, he was my first "boss" while employed with the city Parks Department. Ed was a good man, my friend and benefactor to me and many others growing up in South Buffalo. He provided many of us with advice, encouragement, recognition and assistance. As a result of his efforts, we had greater opportunity and better lives. I regret I cannot be in Buffalo to pay my respects in person. May the Commissioner rest in peace.

May God comfort your family in your time of bereavement. I met Mr. Mahoney while visiting my sister, Willie at the Civil Service Office. He was a very kind, gentle man, full of spunk. Whenever I visited my sister, he always made me laugh, and at times, I really needed it. I guess he knew that. May our loving GOD keep you in his care.

September 30, 2007

My deepest sympathies to the Mahoney family on Eddie's passing.

Edward (Eddie) Mahoney was a quiet man. Husband, father, policeman,Councilman, South Ward leader, friend of many and Election’s Commissioner were all functions that filled his life. Each role was carried out in the same quiet and dependable manner with which Eddie approached everything that he did in life. Generations of partisan warriors set the tenor, of their political activities, according to the gentlemanly manner demonstrated by this rock like fixture of local democratic politics.

South Buffalo was both his home and his chosen refuge. He was as “Irish as paddy’s pig.” He reveled in the many Hibernian functions in the year’s calendar. The “parade” and the “Irish center luncheon” were green letter days on Eddy’s personal calendar. Weekly luncheons, at Detondo’s with friends, were sessions where the news of the day was hashed over and evaluated. The lucky few who attended, were given a practical education by a learned man, schooled in the often seething cauldron of ward politics. Eddie never shrank from a contest, but embraced it with an Irishman’s love for battle.

A more ardent partisan, than Eddie Mahoney, never walked the earth. Yet always, the man would recognize someone, from an opposing faction, with a handshake and a smile, offering recognition to a fellow toiler in the political vineyards. Eddy taught many of us, younger than he, that “civility in politics” is not only possible, but a necessary and respected quality that he practiced every day. Given the super heated air, of the continuing Tong wars of South Buffalo Politics during the 1970’s, 80’s & 90,” this was a quality much to be admired, yet not much practiced.

And now, like all men and women brought forth on this earth, “Mr. Mahoney” has left us for the far beyond. May the roads rise to meet you, Commissioner Mahoney. May the rains fall gently on your fields and the winds be ever at your back. And until we see you again, May god hold you in the palm of his hand.
