Joel JAVA Obituary

JAVA - Joel J., Sr. Of Lancaster, NY entered into rest on August 11, 2015, age 72 after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Carol (nee Moore); dear father of Joel and Jessica; dear brother of John J. Jr. (Donna) and James J. Sr. (Dolores); also survived by several nieces and nephews. Joel Sr. was a proud graduate of Lancaster High School, who returned there to teach after graduation from Hobart College. He taught American History and Government for over 30 years at Lancaster High School prior to retiring, and was the Chairman of the Social Studies Dept. In addition, Joel Sr. worked for many years at the Lancaster Recreation Dept. during the summers. He was also an accomplished and respected football official who officiated games at all levels, including Division I College games throughout the Northeast. A die hard Buffalo Bills fan, he was also a member of the Buffalo Bills chain crew for over 20 years and worked many memorable games at Rich and later Ralph Wilson Stadium. An avid gardener and lover of western stories and films, he will be sorely missed. Family will receive relatives and friends at the WENDEL & LOECHER INC. FUNERAL HOME, 27 Aurora St., Lancaster Sunday August 16 from 1-5 PM where services will be held Monday morning at 11 AM. I am so sad to find this obituary. I was recently reminded that if someone made a difference in your life you should let them know. I'm too late for that but not too late to tell his family that I considered him a wonderful teacher. He was wonderful to all of us. Smiling now, I just remembered he actually let me and another student leave class to go get gas for my car! Why I needed to I don't remember, but I remember being very grateful that he understood. We were crazy kids but he didn't make us feel that way. He is missed.

Mr. Java and my Dad had a great relationship, both being LCHS faculty members. I remember them hanging out together occasionally. Great memories from school days and the genuine concern Mr. Java had for his students and faculty members.
