John, Last night Shauna stopped by to see us. It was so good to see her, but I know how much she must miss you. I am sure you are there watching over your family that you love so much. Your spirit lives on no matter what, I am sure your family will see signs of you reaching out to them. We all know that you are fine, that God saw to it that you came home to him. We all feel the sorrow for ourselves, we want things to stay as they are, to be able to have that person be a part of our every day lives as they always were. We must always remember to grab any joy we have in life, remember to look at the little joys that Gid provides, the birds, the buds on the trees, the flowers springing up therough the ground, the snow on the trees. There is so much beauty in this world and we have to learn to love those we lose, remember them and keep their memory alive but to also enjoy what we have. I know how difficult it can be but we also have to allow ourselves to grieve and cry when necessary, I think I do that everyday. We will rememeber you, your kind ways, the time you gave to others, the love for your God, your family and friends. Love, Janet

To the Freidhoff Family,

It is obvious looking through this guestbook how many lives Capt. John has touched, and there are many more that did not sign. He meant alot to people accross the country, we all know that he meant the most to you guys and I pray that the Lord will guide you through these tough times and that you seek comfort in him.
I interned with Capt. John about five years ago now and I learned so much from him and I would always call if I had a problem. I give Capt. John credit for convincing me to follow my dreams, he believed in me and now I am in college following my dreams. - My Condolences

To the Freidhoff family-
I worked with John from 2004-2007 when I was stationed in Cleveland, OH. He was certainly a wealth of knowledge at the office, but he was also someone with whom you could share your troubles and triumphs. He was a wonderful listener who always had a smile on his face and I can't say that I ever heard him complain. His life was dedicated to giving, in many ways. My prayers are with you during this time, and I know that everyone John came in contact with will keep his memory in their heart and minds.

We are so sad to hear of John's passing. His grin and kind voice will always be remembered. We could see how proud he was of Joseph when we would chat at baseball as we watched the kids play. We know that even though he will not be physically standing with us when the new season begins, he will be watching over the EYB fields from a distance, with a smile on his face.
Keeping all of you in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Vickie, Melissa, Jessica, Shauna, and Joseph.

I wanted to leave a note for you letting you know how much your husband and dad meant to so many people.

I know Dave and I have so many fond memories of times we have spent with all of you.

Kids, your dad loved each one of you so dearly. Each one of you were a sparkle in his eye. He spoke of you all the time and he was so proud of you and all your accomlishments.

Vickie, I know how much John cherished you and the love you shared. I know when you were sharing him with the community, the nation, and everywhere in between; he counted on you to tow the line with the kids. I know his love for you was deepened by the way you cared for your kids.

There won't be a day go by that his zest for life will not show itself to you. Let all the memories come.

John is singing with the angels and I just know he has the beat down now. :)

Our love to you all.

To the Freidhoff family,
I was very shocked and saddened to learn of your loss. I don't know if you remember us, but we do remember you and John and your family. Even in the short time we knew you and few times we spent together, you and John touched our lives. Our son, Curtis, always remembers "Captain John" when he talks of joining the Coast Guard. We are praying fervently for God's comfort, grace and strength for you today and always.

It was very sad news to hear about John's passing away. I knew John for 5 yrs while at Buffalo as a friend and colleague at the Great Lakes Center. He was always cheerful and willing to help in any way he could! A very fine person and a good human being. He will be missed dearly!

I'm not even sure how to put into words the many ways that John has touched my life. He took me under his wing and I owe so much of where I am today to him. I can still remember the first time I met him and can hear his voice coming from around the corner of his office. He always seemed to know the right times to surprise me with a phone call while I was away at college and give me a few encouraging words. I love him for the person that he was and what he has done for every person who was lucky enough to ever cross his path. He was an incredible person and is missed by all.

Aunt Vickie, Girls and Joesph,
Uncle John was a very loving and caring man. He loved to make everyone laugh and made sure they had a good time. He will most diffently be missed. I guess the Lord needed a strong man to lead his future rescue missions and John was that man. Just remember u will meet again and the Lord always was in misterious ways. If u need to talk or the kids need someone to talk to I am here. Love you always.

Dear Vickie, Melissa, Shauna, Jessica and Joseph,
I'm deeply saddened by John's passing. You can be very proud of the man John was. John did more good in his short time here than many people could do in ten lifetimes. We should all strive to live as John did. Be good, kind and giving. Find something you're passionate about and teach others. He'll live on in the lives of the many people he touched and inspired.

Dear Vicki, Melissa, Jessica, Shauna, and Joseph -- I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of John's death. I had the pleasure to meet and serve with John at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office in Buffalo 1996-1999.

As I got to know John I was amazed by how many roles in played in so many lives ... Son, Husband, Father, Brother, Scoutmaster, Fireman, Professor, Captain, Coast Guardsman, the list goes on and on. I truly do not know how he was so accomplished in so many things in so little time. As a Coast Guardsman, he displayed the same enthusiasm and "can do" spirit that was his trademark in all aspects of his life.

It was a true honor and privlege to know John. He will be missed and remembered by those in the Coast Guard.

Our thoughts and prayers are with him, you and your family.

Working side by side with him for over 4 years at Buff State, John Freidhoff taught me more than I could ever have imagined. I've never met a man more dedicated to everything he did than John. From his family to Coast Guard; boating to environmental research, John always offered everything he had. He never hesitated to assist or sacrifice to help someone in need. I miss him terribly as a friend. I will always cherish the wonderful memories he gave me, the lessons he taught, and the beautiful spirit he brought to this world.

Hey Commander,
You were so proud and excited when you were promoted. I got a kick out of calling you Commander and you said you just couldn't get use to hearing it. I was a scientist at the Great Lakes Center and worked with John on Lakes Erie and Ontario in the mid-1990s. I am deeply saddened by his loss and know that he will be missed more deeply than most.

What He Would Say

By Andrea L. Rue

After you wipe away your tears
And dry your gloomy eyes
I want the thought of me
To be the reason that you smile

there is no reason to grieve
For it brings shades of gray
I am better off now
Just start a brand new day

I am looking down on you
With grandpa by my side
Watching your accomplishments
With encouragement and pride

I hope all of your dreams come true
No matter what they are
You can do what you put your heart to
In life they will take you far

My love is like a stream
It runs pure from heart to heart
I am still there with you along the way
For we will never part

I will be there for you
When you need someone
I can be the one you need
From dusk until dawn

You are a jewel
You are a treasure
you are one of a kind
And you shine just as bright
as the stars in the sky

Keep your eyes upon me
Keep me in your sight
I helped you down the crooked road
Like I led you to the light

Sometimes I knew the words to say
Gave thanks for what you've done
But then they flew up and away
As quickly as they come

Are there really any words for this?
I find the question tough
Anything I could have said
Just didn't seem enough

What way was there to thank you
For your heart, your sweat, your tears
For ten thousand little things you did
For oh so many years.

From all of us;
The Wagner, Wunz, and Luebke Familys

Dear John's Family,
I was saddened to see of John's death. I went to high school with John and had many classes with him. He was bright, funny, kind, and we all knew he was a christian. We all knew John would do well, but after reading how he impacted others, none of us could have imagined just how wonderful he had become! What a great man he was. I can't imagine the loss your family is feeling. A mother not having her son, a wife missing her husband, and the children who will miss their father for a lifetime. Obvisously John touched many lives and his life will be a guiding light for lifetimes to come. His was a life taken too soon but I am sure he is with all those who love him in our Lord's home. Your family is in my prayers.

October 23, 2007

Captain John came the closest of anybody I know to doing everything good that life has to offer. John was an Eagle Scout, head of the Great Lakes Field Station, a boat captain, an accomplished diver, a fire fighter, a colleague, husband, father, friend and a leader. But the thing that impressed me most about John was his faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He touched so many lives as only a Believer can. The night that he was called home, I had a dream the he had been put in charge of a fleet of God's boats. God had put John in charge because He knew the job would be perfectly done. Some of us who had worked down at the field station were preparing to sand and paint them to John's specifications. In my dream, I kept asking, "Is this the way you want it done, John?" We were all in Heaven working together.

It was a pleasure working with John in life and, while it's hard being left behind to bear the sorrow and grief of having lost someone so dear and so great, I'm trusting that he is in Heaven and will have a slip ready for us when we cross that river. And we'll work together again.

My prayers and condolences go to Vicky and the children and also to Caleb. I'm praying that God will bless you in this time of sorrow.

Dearest family and friends, My God in Heaven! Lord have Mercy! I'm lost for words. Our prayers and thoughts are with you, John's family and friends. We at DTE Energy Environmental and Marine Ops are John's counterparts and perform similar activities to his, (we dive, sample, and love the waters and environment, as John and you folks do). We sincerely feel your pain. I've known John since the Great Lakes Science Ships program began. It was always a pleasure to interact with Capt. John and all you fine folks. An occasional e-mail, an occasional phone call, and the annual gatherings. His special "way" always made me smile and just thinking back, blesses me and makes me smile even now. His presence with be truly missed...but definitely not forgotten. He was one of the "Good Ones"! I'm unable to be there with you folks physically, but I'm with you all prayerfully. If family, or friends need to talk, pray, or both...I'm humbly at your service (we're just a Lake Erie length away...we'll watch for you from the Michigan shores). May God's Amazing Grace be with all John's family and friends. Comfort and strength, in large measure, be with you all. I do believe Jesus needed a "Special Captain" in Heaven. He's got one now!

God's Blessings and Peace, Captain Gary Longton, DTE Energy Environmental and Marine Ops

October 23, 2007

If the measure of a life were love instead of time, then Captain John lived many lifetimes. I looked to him as an example of how someone could immitate Christ in their daily life, reaching out to everyone with love and compassion. He was so open about his faith, and was committed to doing God's work. He cared about people so much. I worked for him as an intern and learned so much from him. He taught me how to be confident in my abilities and to trust in God's will for my life. He cared about his students and always made time for us in his busy schedule. We will all miss him so much. We will always carry with us the words of advice and encouragement that he gave us. I pray for his family and friends every day. Remember that God stands by you always, and carries you through times of sorrow. May He give you His everlasting Peace and Comfort.

When I Must Leave You For A Little While...
When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile.
And for my sake and in my name,
live on and do all the things the same.
Feed not on your loneliness and empty days, but fill each working hour in useful ways.
Reach out your hand in comfort and cheer and in turn I will comfort you and hold you near.
And never, never be afraid to die for I am waiting for you in the sky!

John, my very best friend, my rock. I think I first met him in kindergarten, but I have clear memories of John being my best friend since third grade. He was a member of scout Pack 212 in Vinco, PA. His Dad, before him, was one of the leaders of that pack. That's where he grew to love scouting. I can still remember the time we shared a tent at scout camp.

As kids, John and I had many adventures. From camping on Chickoree Mountain, to fishing side-by-side on Hinston run. These were some of my best memories from childhood.

One time when we were 13 or 14, we talked my Dad into dropping us off at the Ebensburg reservoir in the evening because we were going to fish all night and catch the big one. It was a beautiful fall evening. But is turned into a clear cold night. Both of us forgot matches and were freezing. So John came up with the idea to rake together a big pile of leaves and we buried ourselves in them to make it through the night.

I remember another time when we were older, we were fishing together on Chest creek when it was cold and pouring down rain. But the most memorable part of that day was his contentness. He was truly at peace that day.

The decades of our annual camping trips to the Alleghany National forest would have never happened without John pulling us all together. Those were the best of times.

Being stuck in Russia, I can't tell you how distraut I am that I am physically unable to make it to his funeral and pay homage to his wonderful life. When I get back to the states, one of my first priorities will be to visit and pay my respects. I owe him that many times over.

God Bless John Freidhoff

John will be greatly and sadly missed by all at Buffalo State College, the U.S. Coast Guard, Boy Scouts, Lake Erie Beach Fire Company, The First Church of Evans, but mostly his friends and family.
John's character and dedication to his convictions are matched by very few men. Many people strived to be as openly spiritual and faithful as him. John certainly lived life on the "outside" with desire for adventure and fun. He greeted friends with a hearty laugh and bear hug and strangers with a firm handshake and happy demeanor. John guided many adults but a greater number still of young adults at Senior Youth Group. Our children will be forever positively impressed by this. Frienship's happy memories will live on in us.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of John Freidhoff - a good man, a wonderful father and a dedicated Scouter.

I met John for the first time on April 28, 2007 at a Venturing event at Custaloga Town. I remember thinking he was so enthusiastic and full of life. His inquisitive mind and casual nature made it a real pleasure to talk with John. I was so looking forward to seeing John again and enjoying his company... and expected that would happen in the near future.

My condolences to the entire Freidhoff family. John will be missed by the many, many lives he touched - including mine.

We are truly sorry for your loss. We have only known John for a few years but the impression that he left upon us will last a lifetime. He greeted everone with a smile and was so genuine when you spoke with him. He spoke fondly of his family - his greatest achievements. He will forever be missed.

To Mr. John - from Jared Himes - a "round of applause" for being a great Cub Master. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Himes Family (Chris, Kim, Emily, and Jared)

Captain John was and always will be the heart and soul of the Great Lakes Center. There are so many stories of his willingness to help that go above and beyond...I'll never forget John setting up a cot in his office to grab a couple hours of sleep so that he could head back out on the water and run the research vessel to allow a graduate student to collect acoustics data in the middle of the night. He was that kind of guy. John was proud of the lab, the students, and the lakes. I spent many hours with John on Chesapeake Bay while conducting my own graduate work, and I can say that his energy and enthusiasm were conatagious and uplifting. John, you will be missed, but your spirit will live on in the work of the many, many students and stewards of the lakes that you helped throughout your career.

Vicki and kids,
Your husband and Dad was one of the most easy going guys that I've ever met. I knew him from the Coast Guard and later in working with with him on the St. Lawrence catching eels of all things!, That is where I met all you guys...John was always a great teacher, worker and most of all, a great friend. He always did things with a sincere interest. He was always speaking of and was very proud of his family. I'm so sorry and sad to hear of this, try to find strength in each other. Someone else on this guest book said God must have need a steady hand at the helm, I believe that.

I had the pleasure of meeting John for the first time a few weeks ago in Burlington Ontario at a meeting to coordinate monitoring work in Lake Ontario. He had great charisma and was willing to help out in every way that he could. We, his Canadian colleagues, are stunned and very saddened at his loss.

"Captain" John was a wonderful man and his untimely passing is a terrible loss for the Great Lakes community. He was respected and admired by those who knew him and had the pleasure of calling him a colleague and friend. His enthusiasm, warmth and willingness to teach and help others will be greatly missed. My heart and prayers go out to his family. Hopefully, you will find some comfort in knowing how much others throughout the Great Lakes admired and cared for our dear "Captain" John. We at the Great Lakes Program at UB and New York Sea Grant extend our deepest sympathy. God bless and comfort you during these dark days.

My deepest and most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Captain John. I had the pleasure of working with him at the Great Lakes Center. Captain John was a true and genuinely good person, always willing to give a hand to others. Often when I went to see him I was looking for help. With his gruff voice and constant smile he'd always say, "What can I help you with?" And he meant it. He will be deeply missed. God bless you and your family Captain John.

Captain John made a positive impression on everyone who had the honor of getting to know him. His warmth showed through his easy smile, caring spirit, and his kind and giving nature. I have yet to see another person who could rival his work ethic. These are only a few of the attributes that those who encountered John came to know. He spoke so highly of his family, and with such pride, that though I don't know any of you personally, my heart and prayers go out to all of you. May your strong faith carry you through this tragic loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with Capt. John's family and many friends and colleagues. I had the great pleasure of first meeting John over a decade ago at the inaugural Great Lakes Science Vessel Coordination Workshop. I was struck by his enthusiasm and leadership and, even more so, by his love for his work, the Great Lakes, and those of us who were fortunate enough to have worked with him. He has touched many lives, and we are the better for it.

Victoria, I manage the Buff State faculty/staff Bible Discussion Group of which John was a part for many years. He wasn’t able to be with us physically a lot after 9/11 but rarely missed prior to that. We all loved him. I considered him a good friend and we regularly exchanged e-mails. He loved the Lord and enjoyed being with us for our discussions which often became quite deep. Of course, he always wanted it to be practical and kept us on our toes. I loved his openness and spontaneity. He often expressed his love for you and the children. He was concerned about being a good husband and father in light of scripture and all of us in the group needed that part of the discussion as well. I sent a message to the faculty and staff in our group (about 80) requesting prayer for your family. I have received numerous e-mail replies since it went out this morning assuring me of their support for you. We will miss John.

heartfelt regards,

To the family of John Freidhoff:

I did not know John, but I thought that I should attempt to offer some words of sympathy, for whatever they are worth.

What I know of John is based on what was written about him this past weekend in the Buffalo News. After reading the article, I can conclude that he lived his decidedly short but accomplished life in a vibrant and inspiring way. Maybe that can provide you with some level of comfort.

I am truly sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. John was a great guy who died doing what he loved. He was always there to help out with any environmental cause and was a great asset to the Great Lakes.

This year I was thrilled to have him as Captain of Sturgeon Point and Wendt Park for the Great Lakes Beach Sweep. His expertise and gentle spirit led the scouts and taught them much about marine life.

Please take some comfort that all the wonderful work he has done on the Great Lakes and for Lake Erie will live on forever.

He will be missed.

Dear Family,

My deepest sympathy to you over the loss of John. I met John ten years ago at the first Great Lakes Science Vessel Coordination Workshop that was held in Detroit, Michigan. John, in his enthusiastic way, became involved in planning all of the future annual workshops and we became good friends. He was a kind, loving and gracious man and had much to offer the Great Lakes science vessel community. He was always willing to share his knowledge and was patient with those of us that didn't know a boat from a bowling ball. I was greatly saddened to hear of his sudden death but wanted to share with you how much he was loved by his colleagues and that he will be missed very much.

May God sustain during this difficult time.

This came to me from one of our staff at Buffalo State:
I have a story about John touching the lives of our youth. I met John years ago when my daughter (now a college graduate) worked on a water purification project at school. John invited us to the Great Lakes Research Station. At the science fair we could not understand why the judges questioned my daughter at great length and took copious notes. Later one of the judges sought us out of the crowd to say how impressed they were with her display and explanation of the entire purification process. That was all thanks to John and the information he provided on where to obtain chemicals, equipment, and further research materials. It was a great learning experience for my daughter and one she still talks about today.

My prayers are with his family for comfort and peace.
