Richard Escobales Obituary

Escobales, Richard H., Jr.

Jun 8, 2025

Passed away peacefully in Boston, Massachusetts on the feast of Pentecost. Born in 1943 to the late Richard and Marion (Curran) Escobales, Richard grew up on Staten Island. He was a member of the first graduating class from Xaverian High School in Brooklyn; he then attended St. Peter's College in Jersey City and went on to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. In 1973 Richard began his 43-year career as a professor of mathematics at Canisius College (now University). During his tenure at Canisius, he served as department chair, chair of the Faculty Senate, and chair of the Educational Policy Committee. A dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, Richard devoted himself to his students, his mathematical research, and his advocacy of mathematics education. Richard's faith was paramount to his life, and, true to his roots in Jesuit education, he joyfully found God in all things. He was a long-time parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church in Kenmore, NY, where he sang in the choir for over three decades. Richard was predeceased in 2005 by his beloved wife Irma. He leaves behind his three cherished children: Teresa (Patrick) Collins of Boston, MA; David (Lauren) Escobales of Sykesville, MD; and Hilary (Demian) Craig of Las Vegas, NV. He also leaves behind his five adored grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the C. Mertz and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 911 Englewood Ave. on Friday, June 13th from 4 to 7 PM. All are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave. on Saturday, June 14th at 11:30 AM. Please assemble at Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's memory to Canisius University. Please share condolences at mertzfh.com.

Dear Theresa, David, Hillary,

My deepest condolences on the passing of your father. Richard was my professor at Canisius College in several mathematics courses. He was an enthusiastic, dedicated, and extremely knowledgeable teacher, but also a great mentor. He encouraged me to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics, which I did, at his own beloved Alma Mater, Notre Dame. Like him, I embarked on a career as a math professor, and his example as a great teacher continues to inspire me to do the best for my own students.
