I remember Dr. Rosenthal when he first arrived at University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. He was cut from a different cloth than most instructors. Down to earth, humble and kind. I thank him for his mentorship. May his memory be a blessing

Dear Bobbie and family,
We remember you and Bob often in Falls Church, Virginia. I fondly recall many childhood adventures with Bob on Buffalo's west side and how wonderful it was to reconnect with him in Northern Virginia many decades afterward. He was a great man, a good friend, and is sorely missed in our hearts. We hope that you and your family are well.

Bobbie, Sam and Leah,
I still reflect back on the great days I enjoyed when at UW-Madison SVM, and Bob was such a part of that. I was always amazed by his many interests (and talents!): banjo, fiddle, line dancing, fly fishing and so on. And his devotion to family and his patients and clients. Was always good/fun to reconnect whether on the phone or at a meeting.
Hope you are doing well.

Dear Rosenthal family,
We met Dr. Rosenthal last September when our dog Stella was diagnosed with cancer and began chemo treatment. His calm, comforting demeanor and gentle way of explaining complicated issues have made the experience much more bearable and less stressful. He will be missed, and we send our sincere thanks for his help, and deepest condolences to you.

Bobbie, Sam and Ivy and Leah,
Geez...don't even know where to start. Totally unbelievable, but then again, so were most of our "doings" with the Rosenthals. Starting with John's years living below, or was it above Bob in Baltimore, the adventures continued to mount. Our visit to you in MA when Sammy was only 5 weeks old...who in their right mind would do that? And who in their right mind would say it was ok to do that? (And didn't your dog find something obscene of mine?)Then our trip to Canada or did that come first? That's where Bob ate Shrimp and responded with an anaflactic reaction as we were riding an escalator. Meeting for a visit to Amish country when you were in Illinois and the kids were little. Of course our visits to Madison on the way to the boys camp in Northern Wisconsin and finding out that on your anniversary video from Camp Tamaqua(?), there was a picture of my dad as one of the early counselors! Our visit to Comedy Sportz for an evening of fun. Then there was John and Howie's visit to U of Wisconsin where Bob and Sam agreed to meet with them. Howie was in his "Bob Dylan" phase...who knows how Bob and Sammy survivied that!? Recently there was talk of a possible fly fishing trip to Patagonia. We just needed to get thru Brad's wedding before thinkin about that. Bottom line...don't wait. Do!
So many fine, fun memories. So much surprise at the sudden, ver sad news. So much love and admiration for our friendship that has lasted the years inspite of distance and infrequent periods of communication.
Our doors are open...if Cincinnati becomes a destination you can't resist or a stop on the way somewhere else.
Our love, thoughts, and hugs are with all of you. John promises to fish the heck out of the Frying Pan and other Colorado rivers in honor of Bob!
Bobbie, you are amazing, keep on keeping on. There is no one right way through grief and loss so do what you need to as you journey onward.
We hope we brought a few smiles to your face. We were always pretty good at laughing together.
xxoo, Julie and John

Bob Rosenthal was one of a kind. I was very lucky to have worked with him at Southpaws. He had many jokes and so many stories. It was a joy to hear of his college days and of his beautiful family. He was so proud of it all. My thoughts go out to his family.

Bob Rosenthal was nothing less than a walking fountain of knowledge. I was lucky enough to have met him in 2004 in Fairfax VA and worked with him up until his retirement to WA. I considered him a great friend, great teacher and an amazing doctor. I will miss his stories of the past. The world will never fully understand the impact he has made on many. He was an amazing friend. I will miss him very much. My family goes out to Bobbie and family.

Dear Rosenthal Family,
I was a senior veterinary student at the University of Illinois when Dr. Rosenthal was on staff there. I just spoke with the legendary Dr. Rosenthal for the first time the other day on the phone. His gentle voice is still in my head. After 17 years in clinical veterinary practice, I still find myself nervous when consulting with those with more letters after their name. When it was Dr. Rosenthal who responded to my request for consultation, I wanted to say "is this THE Dr. Rosenthal?" I found him to be instantly reassuring, humble, generous and thoughtful in his delivery of advice. When I got off the phone, I remarked to those standing nearby about how kind he was, and then immediately called my anxious client to share his advice. There needs to be a fish loaded river named after this man for all the contributions he has made to veterinary medicine. He would receive a standing ovation from his thousands of colleagues and clients if we were given the chance. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Bob was an internal medicine resident at the same time I was a small animal surgery resident at the University of Illinois. I'll never forget his glorious sense of humor, love of traditional music, and how he cherished his family. He introduced me to the hammered dulcimer which remains a joy to me to this day. He was a good, good man.

The Rosenthal Family & Friends:
It was great to see so many friends and family at Bob's funeral, but all things considered, Bob would rather we had all had been fishing (or even contra-dancing) with him. It was very appropriate that Bob left us while following one of his many vocations (in this case chasing the wily trout) because when you look up “joie de vivre” in the dictionary (or now on Wikipedia) you'll see a picture of Bob. Bob demonstrated interest, attention, concern, passion, and patience while actively mentoring and helping numerous interns, residents, undergraduate and graduate students, technicians, and veterinarians to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Bob helped mould many of us into compassionate caring veterinarians (and some even into veterinary oncologists). But much more than that, Bob made all of us (vet and real people) into better people for knowing him, working with him, and more importantly being a friend and/or colleague. With his passing we shall miss him dearly but his spirit lives on in us.
Though the miles may make us seem worlds apart, may the love we share keep us close at heart.

Dear Rosenthal family,
I am immensely saddened to learn of the loss of Dr Rosenthal. While he did not know me, i knew of him through his amazing contributions to VIN's oncology folder. I loved his grounded sensibility and sage advice, and I have benefited as a practitioner on numerous occasions as a result of his posts. My sincere condolences for the loss of this great veterinarian...

All of us in the oncology community will miss Bob tremendously, and I am sad that future young oncologists will not get to know his wisdom and humor. Early in our careers, we had so many good times at meetings, and had long discussions about teaching students, training residents, and taking care of patients. To me, Bob's viewpoints were always the most thoughtful and insightful, his outlook on life was so positive, and his input into the growth of our specialty was profound.

Bobbi, Sam and Leah,
I'm very sad to learn of the loss of Bob. I have been lucky to have known him, worked beside him ( as Badgers in the '80s!) and maintained a friendship, albeit over a distance, or at meetings, for nearly 30 years. I stll wear the tee shirt I got when we exchanged them.(Duluth vs. Rochester) And how I enjoyed the entire Rosenthal clan while misbehavin' at Wisconsin football games.
Bob will be missed, and remembered, by so very many. And for me, the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile whistle Bob gifted me, will take on even more special meaning...if that is possible.
Anne and my thoughts are with you at this sad time, but a time when we will celebrate a great life of a GREAT guy.

Can't believe he's gone. Wonderful man, veterinarian, and friend. This horrible news brings back my fondest memories of watching the Bills many Sundays on the couch while being benignly assaulted by a bulldog and a pitbull(the Bills actually won sometimes), seasonal attempts at raising bees with one paltry harvest of "Horse Pasture Bloom", and too many frosty Opening Days at Frontier Field.
We'll miss you, Bob. We'll miss your enthusiasm and optimism.

There is a hole in our lives now, keenly felt, but also a knowledge that Bob inspired so many of us and enriched so many lives. I am so proud that I knew this man. His legacy is that he left us and the world a better place, a wiser and more compassionate place, and a more humorus place, because that is what I will remember most about Bob, his lighter side. So, Bob, i hope the fishing is better wherever you are.

Dear Bobbie & family,
My heartfelt sympathy on your loss.
Like many veterinarians, Bob had a large impact on my career. And despite my giving Dr. Bob many reasons to the contrary- his belief in me and my abilities remained unshakeable. He was also a dear friend who was amoung the first people I spoke to after the birth of my children, and who shared his happiness and joy of family (especially the grandkids in Seattle) with me. There was never any question about his dedication to his family, veterinary medicine, the pursuit of the wily trout, the banjo, etc. He lived life and helped all of us to prioritize the same.
He will be so missed. And I will treasure the memory of his laughter.

My condolences to Bob's family, I don't know any of you but I knew Bob and I am saddened for your loss. When I look at my life as a tapestry, Bob has been one of the threads within it for 33 years. Not a thick thread because we were not big buddies that called each other, shared jokes, life's golden moments or any such stuff. But a thin thread for 20 + years as we met up at meetings, and then a bit thicker thread the last 10 years as we both became consultants with VIN and interacted more via collaborating on book chapters and attending weekly teleconference VIN meetings, etc. Bob used words so elegantly that I envied him and wish I had less emotional reactions to topics and more measured, thoughtfully crafted, responses like his. I believe that Bob found the joy that every life should have. And he gave some of that joy to all that he met.

Dear Bobbie and Family,
I am glad I had the opportunity to know and work with Bob. I always enjoyed his company- we were sole mates of sorts at work. He was a very gifted and analytical person and very inquisitive. He shared this perspective with our interns in morning rounds faithfully. I know there are many many doctors out there that benefitted by having Bob as a mentor. I was sad to see him leave and we kept in touch via postcards and occasional email chats. He's a great guy and we will miss him.

Dear Bobbie and family,
I had the pleasure of working with RCR at Southpaws where he took me under his wing. Over the past year he patiently wrote countless recommendation letters, helped me shape my personal statement, honored me by filling out a mentor scholarship application and spent countless phone conversations encouraging, inspiring, and being my cheerleader as I try to follow in his steps and become a Veterinarian.
I am beyond honored to know that he though of me as his last protege and to have had him in my corner these past years. I am so thankful to have met him and will forever cherish our Contra outings, running stories, the love of life and family he shared with me and the times he jokingly called me the "lesser" or "Greater Heather".
Words can not express the sorrow I feel. I only hope that I can honor his memory by becoming accepted into Veterinary school and following the big footsteps he left in front of me.
My thoughts and Prayers are with you all at this time.

We are deeply saddened by the news of Bob's passing.
Although we knew him only as a colleague, his kindness and humanity made him somehow much more; so that this is more than the loss of a colleague, it is the loss of a person who made everywhere he went - and even some places he didn't go - better and brighter.
Sad as we are, our hearts ache for you in your loss. We can only hope that being reminded of how dearly he was held by so many people around the world, will give you some condolence.

Dear Bobby and family,
I have known Bob for over thirty years and I was so proud to call him a dear friend. Although we only got together at professional meetings he freely shared his philosophies and love of life, baseball, fishing and teaching. He was among the first to call when we lost our son Matt in 2004 and I cherished every moment I got to spend with him - all too few. Above all I will always remember his deep and unquestioned love of his family - Bobby, Sam and Ivy, Leah, and the grandkids were always first in his priority list. Please know that my thoughts are with you at this tremendously difficult time. We were all so fortunate to have Bob be a part of our lives - your loss is immeasurable.
Best wishes.

Dear Bobbie and family, I just heard about Bob's passing this morning and cried all the way to work. There are not enough words to say how much he will be missed. Of course I remember him from Rochester 17 years ago as a mentor and a true friend to us interns. He always had a good story and a laugh for us to keep us going. He had us running in the Lilac run and trying to get us out Contra dancing. He never did play the banjo for us though! All these years we have kept in touch and I admired him for all his hobbies and interests and really just for enjoying life which most people dont find the time to do; always a funny and warm and interesting unique person. In the more recent years he would tell us about his grandkids and his face would just light up. Its hard to believe that Bob is gone. He will be missed so much by so many people and not just as a Veterinarian but as a good friend to us all. Nicki
